How to make the 1188 worth 32.5K and not make desmosedici owners mad

let's talk for a minute
when the 1188 "R" comes out next year
at 32.5K (approx)
how on earth will ducati make that bike worth 12.5K MORE than the 1098S and still not piss off the desmosedici owners who'll be spending 65K for THEIR bikes

for example
in hp numbers

1098 - 160
desmo - "greater than 200"
so..... the 1188 will have 180?
is 20hp worth 12.5K MORE than the 1098S?

so....
what do YOU think
what will be on the 1188 to make it worth 12.5K More than the 1098S and STILL not UPstage the desmosedici, costing twice as much (65K)?

Visolara Nov 12th, 2006 6:49 pm

why do you think the 1198R will be 32k?

spalding12 Nov 12th, 2006 6:57 pm

because...
that's the "price point" that ducati holds for it's "R" bikes
the 999R was around that price when it came out originally
though you can get one MUCH CHEAPER now... if you can find a new one

with the tri-colore being 25K... the 1/2 desmosedici price seems like the most logical to ducati

this was discussed A LITTLE BIT at the dealer meeting in salt lake city...
but, not out in the open
only a few folks were privy to this info

again.....
first is the true 1098 roll-out
then.... time to get those desmosedicis into the hands of all those who pre-bought/pre-registered for one

then....... AND ONLY then will the 1188 be discussed in the open

ducati is really doing a GREAT JOB WITH MARKETING for a change

the desmosedici has nothing to worry about from any other model.to put it another way,you think a ferrari enzo owner gives a crap if ferrari upgraded the hp in its lower models?

I think 32k-ish would be fair for the 1188 if it comes equipped similar to the 999R with 1098 features. (Ti rods, hand built engine, a little lighter, etc.)

For the money, (65K!) the Desmosedici had better come with carbon everything, Magnesium engine everything, Ti exhaust, a lime green Jello hottub with three Hooters chicks in it, a beer tap, fully adjustable rake/trail/swingarm, rearsets, downloadable/programable fuelmap/ignition, diagnostics/data aquisition, traction control, easily removeable lighting/blankoffs for the track, a REAL "tool kit", and a coupon redemable for one free repair after your first highside... :D

Im far from a subject matter expert on this, but I thought I read somewhere Ducati was trying to make thier bikes more affordable, thus the $14,999 for the 1098? (think of the base 999 price).

15K for the 1098 IS cheap
only 3.5K more than an R1...

that's CHEAP AS DIRT to me

Exactly. The 1198 will be for the owners that want a great bike to ride/race on the street/track. Desmosedici owners want to own the special bike...and the extra $$ will equate to a more elite status...

...and Desmosedici owners will probably have enough desposable income to own both anyway...

but there is a difference there. even though msrp on an r1 may be 11.5k, no one in their right mind would actually pay that. honda's, kawisaki's, yamaha's, and suzuki's can all be had for much less than msrp. not so with ducati.

still worth the extra few thousand though :D
