Clockwise should increase preload if it is all the way out (counterclockwise) stop turning.

It will not turn either way
When I turn to the left it starts to unscrew the part of the top tube

The silver nut looks chewed up as well. Probably best to leave it alone and get s suspension specialist to investigate. I adjusted mine and it turned freely. I have skyhook.

Did you adjust it with a socket, because that's what it takes to turn mine.

I also hear people talking about "clicks". Mine doesn't click at all. It just turns

I did it with a spanner so I could watch the indicator arrows carefully. I wanted it out 6 full turns but have since backed it off to 5.
