Legal advice, used bike, private sale, USA

Dear fellow Ducatisti

I am looking to buy a collectible Grand Prix bike from a private seller in the USA. Because I do not live in the USA, I would be shipping the bike overseas. I will be in a situation where I would probably leave a deposit and have my shipper or representative pay the balance on collection. This would potentially leave me exposed to the seller making off with my deposit, never to be seen again. Does anyone have experience in these matters and/or could anyone offer any advice on how to manage this situation?

Input appreciated. TIA

You could use an escrow service.

Too many scams or ways for deals like this to go wrong. I'm going out on a limb and guessing it's not cheap, so it would be well worth it to have a professional company handle the trade on the ground, in person, here in the States.

Good luck with the purchase!

If it's an investment quality purchase then you could hire an agent in the US... or come and get the bike yourself.

Exactly. This is what I fear. Unfortunately, coming over in person is not an option in the near future due to business commitments, so finding a representative is my best option. A professional company is exactly what I need. Any leads appreciated.

I'll do it for you, if you pay the airfares, accommodation and provide copious amounts of spending money, plus pay my lost wages for time spent, penal rates included, otherwise I'm of no use to you.

What location in the US is it? That might have an impact on a lead or solution.

I've read those can be quite high, depending on what part of the States you're planning your free time in of course...

NJ. Not far from Newark Airport.
