Duplicate Keys

I bought a Duc with 1 black keys and no red key. I needed more black keys. I'll worry about the red later.

I Googled "duplicate ducati keys" and found John of autolock. His url is http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/ducatichipkey.html I FedEx'd my one black key and made a PalPal payment. He FedEx'd 2 perfect duplicates back the next day. The keys work perfectly. John does what he says he will do when he says he will do it.

Need black keys? See John! Need red key? Uh, that sucks.

What does the "red key" do. . or signify. I'm a new duc owner and only got one key. A black one. I don't know if the red has a specific function of importance.

As far as I know, the use of the red keys started in MY 2002. I'm sure someone else can give a better description what it does and why it matters.

Correct. My 01-ST4 had a regular key, my 02-ST4s had a red key.

I "believe" the red key electronically keys the ECU to a specific black key so that someone cannot use another black key which matches the lock, but not the ECU, to start the engine and ride off with the motorcycle.

The red key is used on bikes equipped with the 'imobiliser'. Either MY'02 or '03. My '03 SS and 999R both have it.

Anyway, the keys of this generation have a readable code-chip in them (same as you can inject in your pet cat or dog). The first key a system sees will become the master key, be it red or black. Normally, it should be the red key simply because that way you know which is the master key. The master key is ONLY needed for enabling/disabling keys, i.e. if you want copies, you need your red key and all your black keys. Any black keys that are not presented during the enabling process will be marked as invalid, i.e. should they be used in the future the imobiliser will block their use.

So, if you never need to make new keys, replace a dash or ECU, then you don't need a red key. But if you do, you may.

On my 03 999S I bought a Silca Blank (Number on back: KW17T5).

Took it to local locksmith with a late model "cloning machine". They cloned it from my only black key....worked aok. Cheap and easy as.

I bought a Ducati blank key and tried to clone but did not work....Silca AOK.

If my Duke breaks down and requires the red key to reset...I will trailer to dealer as they can reset with Mathesis. Highly unlikely situation but if it happens probably requires a dealer anyway. At the end of the day who travels around with the red key with them anyway..pretty unlikely and very silly!!

I have been listening/reading the lost red key thing for the last few years and it seems to have been made a big issue which it is NOT, if you have a working black key.

cheers

Wayne

Thanks for sharing that link. I scared myself recently when I washed my key in the laundry. First I thought it was lost... then I thought it was just ruined. Actually it was neither, but the experience made me want to make a couple duplicates to have laying around just in case.
