749/999 Headlight Mod
Disclaimer: If your bike melts, burns, stall, falls over, or generally misbehaves in any way and you think it's my fault, try thinking some more.
This mod will probably work on other Ducs and other bikes, but proceed at your own risk. Personally, I wouldn't do this on a 748/916/996, etc as those bikes have enough going on for you to worry about.
Anyhoo, here's the skinny:
Remove the left bar pod - remove the little phillips screw holding the high/low switch in:
See the little jumper solderd in there, jumping the blue/yellow and red/yellow wires? Do this. Crappy pic alert...gonna have to squint a bit:
I've been running this for about a year now, no problems. It increases the draw by .1v, no big deal. Works great, and really helps the view on the road at night. Low beam is still just low beam and the flash to pass switch works as normal. High beam gives you both beams.
Have Fun!

So, you've jumpered the low/high beams together...creating the circuit when the high beams are on? I am sorry, but I can't see the pic...

I did the same mod on my 916 and 8 yrs later it's still working, true the electrical system on the old bikes is 'stretched' but if you think about it when riding at night (especially in traffic intense England) the high beam is not really on that much of the time but it does make a huge difference to the amount of light out there, the lights are still poor though even with brighter (claimed?) bulbs.

Yeah, the pattern sucks on the high beam lamp on the xx9 bikes. It's not a power thing, it's a cut thing. I have no problem with the low beam pattern, but the high beam by itself leaves more holes than I like. Having the low on at the same time fills the gaps nicely.
Brandon, there are three wires on the switch: red w/black, blue w/yellow and red w/yellow. All I did was solder a small jumper tieing the blue w/yellow and red w/yellow together at the terminals. That's it!

Has anyone tried this with the MY 04 and later ST's? These bikes have the new dashboard and upper fairing. Unlike the earlier (US) models of ST's, the high beam and low beam do not light up simultaneously. I am curious if lighting the two beams simultaneously will melt anything.

Thanks,
I am going to do it to my 05 749 tonight. I personally prefer to annoy oncoming traffic than to go unnoticed by it...

Hooked up my 05 999 tonight, 10/1/06. So far so good. Very simple, easy to do. I actually used the soldering wire as my jumper. Just laid it across poles and melt away! A tip for the young ones...don't put a hot soldering iron between your fingers. Chuckracer....I got your back if your ever in Jersey!

Nice and complete! Best zero cost mod I know of...even cheaper than just washing the bike! 15 minutes and presto! Thanks again.
Now, if you have a similar mod to make plastic become carbon fiber let me know.
