I saw a report that stated these companies are more often than not using your computer for bad things, like spamming, and war dialing/pinging, and spreading viruses. I highly doubt they need my computer to cure cancer - if that was true why wouldn't they just go to Circuit City and buy their own 289 dollar E-machines? that's pretty cheap for curing cancer...

Because if you hooked every 'super' computer together and ran them for decades, they still couldn't equal the power of millions of single computers running small portions of the problem.
There may be cause for concern about some sites, but name an internet site that does not offer some level of threat, even this one. To dismiss the good done by the honest sites is a dis-service to the work they are doing. I have three systems in the house, one is folding for Stanford University (doubt they are going rouge) that is looking at the protein chains in DNA, another is looking at data from SETI (don't think I will find anything, but my name will go down in history if I do ), the third machine was looking for a task and this may be it.
Your computer sits there doing virtually nothing 99.99% of the time, this is a good way to put it 'good' use.

Yeah, but...
Honda = 4
Yamaha = 0
Kawasaki = 0
Suzuki = 14
Considering our small numbers, we are kicking ass.

Me too. I'd love to help, but I guess I don't really feel comfortable with the idea that someone or something is having their way with my computer. I am well aware of spyware and viruses and other dangers of the net, and I'm well protected, but after two hard drive crashes in the last four months, I'm pretty leery of letting anyone into my machine, so to speak.
Until I hear more facts and less cheerleading, I remain on the sidelines with my computer shut off when I'm done. Sorry.
As a Renal Disease patient - I've been on dialysis since 2001 - I am probably a little more sensitive to this plight than most, but still...I'm sceptical.
