Hypermotard compared KTM SM /SMT?

I recently bought a KTM SMT and love it! What an awesome bike. I bought it to use for all around touring and sport.

I however still lust after a hyper.

Can anyone tell me if they have ridden both what the hyper feels like in comparison?

Would ultimately like to have the SMT set up for "touring" and a hyper to play around in town with.

I can give you the lowdown between a Hyper S and SMR having been owned by both.

The Hyper is a much smaller bike than the SMR SMT, the SMT seat is magic (I have one on my SMR), the SMR seat is comparable to the Hyper and not very comfortable.

The Hyper suspension is third world compared to your SMT and 4th world (if there is one) to the SMR.

The Hyper is heavily counter balanced thus smoother, downside is a slower revving engine and lower rev limit, bottom end grunt is more on the Hyper and the SMT SMR has more mid range and top end.

The SMT SMR is not as smooth as the Hyper engine and you feel much more of the piston pulses on the SMT SMR, upside is the SMT SMR engine is much angrier noting the bike needs to be seriously pointed in the right direction before the trigger is pulled, downside is slightly more vibration feel.

Fueling on both is substandard out of the box due to EU3 with the Hyper leading the way to being worse.

It is more expensive to fuel up the Hyper to make it run nicely, SMT SMR is flashable, Hyper is DP ECU $$$

Both would do better with Tuneboy or PCV etc.

Plastics are way stronger on the SMT SMR and cheaper, Hyper is feeble at best.

Single side singer on the Hyper still wins the cool department.

All in all it is what you want from a bike that counts, shove some stickies on your SMT and you will piss off sport riders for sure.

For me I am now finished with Ducatis after I had a coupla problems, I still hang here as there are a bunch of good bastids and my good riding buddy Doon still rides a Hyper S (yes he still lets me go with him ) .

With the knowledge I have now I can tell you that you won't need to spend thousands on rearsets, subframes, triple clamps, handlebars, lightweight batteries, plastics and cheesy Chinese fasteners with ya SMT. (unless you want to)

Looks are subjective, the KTM has been called "Ducatis ugly sister without the diseases"

I love the look of my SMR but not to much on the stand SM.

That is about it, I say if you really want a Hyper and can afford it then do want you want but bear in mind they are more needie that your SMT.

Revelstoker can chime in too, he is now a SMT owner after having the Hyper.

This is mine.

Thanks Monstaman and what you say is true.

Let see, the KTM is much more practical, all around bike vs the Hyper.

The Hyper is going to cost quite a bit ($5-7k) depending on which mods you decide you want/need to make it rip vs the KTM which really just needs new pipes ($2k), map and SAS/O2 removal. SMT sucked during break-in. 2nd/3rd gear are restricted and bike pulses at constant rpm. That is all gone now (mods done) and the KTM really rips it up. Airbox mods are next on my list but are do-it yourself, no cost options.

SMT with its bags, seat, windscreen, better ergos and larger tank lend itself to longer distance rides. SMT is a bit bigger and heavier but you really don't notice it once under way. KTM has much more motor but comes with a radiator.

Hyper, with its forward leaning bias, thinness between the legs and lighter weight would make the Hyper a better track bike on a tight track but the SMR would be a better choice for a faster (longer straights) or less technical track. Many SMT owners are lowering the tripple 10mm to help with turn in.

KTM suspension is so much better than the Hyper and I wouldn't think twice about going off-road on the KTM (if you wanted to). I actually like the brakes better on the SMT. Rear brake actually works (though squeals at times) and the fronts are really strong with constant feel and good bite when you give them a good squeeze. The Hyper S's are over kill.

In a nutshell, Hyper is more like owning a superbike. The Hyper is wicked good in its element (track, tight roads, running around town) and puts a smile on your face a mile long. The front end disappears when riding and it would make a more practical choice vs a superbike. But, if your looking to only have 1 bike in your garage, the KTM SMR/SMT is the way to go.

I like KTM I was looking at some of their bikes before I bought my Hyper. I think they are both fine bikes. I fell in love with the Hyper because I feel it is one of the coolest looking bikes I've ever seen. I know that's not the best way to choose a bike but I just had to have one. Saying that I have 5,000 miles on my 08 and I know that's kinda low but between two kids and working in NYC sometimes in places I don't feel safe leaving my bike. I don't get to ride as much as I would like. I did have one job were I could park it on the job site and it was the best commute I had as opposed to my VW Rabbit diesel with no AC commuter car. That said the bike is the most fun I've had on a motorcycle. Haven't had any problems beside the lean issue and that has been fixed with the 2into1 full system. I would test ride one if I were you. If you want something for around town maybe you should get a real supermoto. I always drool over the Husqvarna sm450. Good luck Husqvarna - SM 450

I had a couple of KTM LC4 Supermotos before the Hyper. Loved them, especially the suspension. I'm not sure what possessed me to by the Hyper, I think it was the looks and that its a Ducati. I'm enjoying the Hyper a lot but I've got this hankering to go back to a supermoto.
