I'm going to say the 1100.
The DS1100 engine is arguably the "perfect" motorcycle engine. And the same thing that makes it so much fun to ride also makes it IMO ideal for commute/city/twisties, the massive amount of torque.

I would say 1100 too.
I use mine every day, commute and twisties on weekend. After 10.000 miles, the fun and the big smile are still there.

I'd like both .... and a couple MV Augusta's, and 3 or 6 KTM's ...and some vintage Husky's ..... BUt, after all the harsh ridability, stalling and fussiness statements I have read about the 1100's (08 thru EVO's) I am really glad I have the 796 .... the 796 is happy @ 3K or 8K ............ ofcourse I'd like a little more boost to lift the front end but the 796 is so easy to flick around around town I just love it .... I admit to only a short test ride on a 1100 .... +47 to 52mpg is real nice too.

if your commute is a nice twisty road, get the 1100.
If its city streets, get an sv650.
The 1100 would be too frustrating to commute on IN the city - always whispering in your ear..."go ahead, give me a little goose...there's no cops around...let's do some cloud gazing...oh, look at these potholes, just like a slalom course...bet you can't back it in around one...endo endo endo endo...come on rev me up a little...if you weren't such a puss, we'd could do -0-100-0 on this block."
Or maybe that's just me? My hyper brings out the hooligan in my hooligan.

I test rode the 796 - "hey this is fun" - and the 1100 right after - "no, THIS is fun" -- bought the S -- "NO!, THIS IS FUN!!!"
Why short change yourself? You know you want it.

I own both, and the only differnce I have noticed is that the 1100 feels physically a bigger bike (if thats actually the case i dont know) and more top end.

if you have the money, get the 1100. i agree with HYPERR, DS1100 is one of the best engines. it can be a bit overheated in the city, but who cares
and if you have more money, get the S
btw, if you like the sound of the dry clucth, there is no question. if you don't - get the 796. but beware, if you get the 11, you cant stop pimpin it.

The Hyper 1100's clutch cover has sound deadening material and is actually quite quiet. A little clatter in neutral. Compared to my 900SS which has no sound deadening material on the inside of its cover, it's like night and day. But yes you can still hear it and is definitely noticeable at stoplights if you shift into neutral(which I never do).
I love the feel of the dry clutch on the Hyper. It is so precise, smooth, and fairly easy to pull. The transmission is so smooth, precise, and positive shifting. It's amazing how much different and more refined it is compared to my Cagiva-era 900SS tranny and clutch which feels and sounds like a bucket of bolts. It even makes the clunky tranny on the BMW R1150R feel smooth in comparison. Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE my 900SS, it is so fun to ride!
Anyways back to the Hyper dry clutch, I like the soubnd of dry clutch but I don't love it. I think the Hyper dry clutch is too quiet IMO. The 900SS is just right. I think an open cover might be too much for me.
