Anyone gut their stock cat?
Hey all - new in here and new to my HM but riding motorcycles for many a year.
Bought a leftover 2008 HM a couple weeks ago and totally love it.
Found this forum while looking for tips on how to gut the stock exhaust pipes, and found some great tips that helped me get the sound i wanted w/ almost no cost at all.
So hoping to do the same w/ the cat - was thinking I could just cut it open, take out the crap, then have someone weld it back together...then I'd have a free flowing cat at a cost of maybe $40 for welding work.
It's not a part anyone sees, especially if you were to cut it in the right spot, so thinking this would save me a bunch of cash.
This and airbox mod and I'm done messing w/ it, but wondering if I'd also need to get an ecu and remap? Not really looking for hp - more for a deeper sound and to let it breathe easier and run cooler. But also don't want it to lose hp or run lean.
Thoughts? Anyone do this or seen a thread on it?
Thanks!

Not sure, but thought I'd add that NJ has now discontinued the requirement of having motorcycles inspected, so gut away NJ!

Nobody's done this? Ok, apparently I'm the cheapest bastard on here.
Actually, just got the 6.6 gallon tank put on and happily surprised to find out that part of the kit/install is removing the airbox and putting in K&N filters...bike sounds much better and feels quicker on the but dyno - it's lifting the front on throttle alone - didn't used to do that.
So maybe I won't gut it. But still would like to hear if anyone's done this.

Do a search, I have seen several posts in here about cutting the stock cans.

Read my post or the title - I'm asking about the cat, not the cans. I already did my cans.
I did a search about the cat, there isn't anything about it.

Leo Vince and Ducati Performance (DP) make cat eliminators. Not as cheap as gutting but I have searched and found the LV for around $200.
Good Luck and keep us posted!

I know it has been done and there are posts about it. You might have to dig a little more. If I remember correctly, it is easy to cut, but to get the guts out is is a lot of work due to the design.
Maybe if you have a plasma cutter it can be done easier. I doubt you would have to have it completely clean, jus a bigger hold in there. Maybe just drive a 1" piece of pipe through the screens and see what happens. If nothing, then cut it apart.
Out!

Backfire.............
You may get a backfire or two...... And may run rich....They have a sensor at bottem of pipe set up! Buy a Fat Duc Manipulator ... Fools the ECU and tune it in, Stops it from running rich and Stops the backfire!
The motor will love you for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ciao Godfather!

So, according to the fatduc FAQ, this only works below 20% throttle and 4k rpm: "Above 20% throttle openings and 4,000 RPMs (open loop) is not affected by the O2 Manipulator."
Since I typically ride at more than 20% throttle and there's not much power below 4000 rpms anyway, I don't understand the benefit of doing the fat duc thing? It wouldn't seem to impact aggressive riding...please to explain?

I don't know anything about gutting the cat, but the FatDuc adds fuel to the mixture, not air. It would be richer with the FatDuc.
