Oil cooler: 2010(large) Vs 2009(small)
The new 2010 model has a bigger oil cooler then the 2009 model. How much cooler would the new larger cooler make the bike running? And i guess they have put a bigger one on there as the old one maybe didn't do a good enough job???

Good question, I was wondering about that too. I know that one that NCR sells is 50% more efficient than the 07-09 model.

I believe the reason they did it was the new design of the engine and the bottom case of the engine. Not because the old one was not good enough. I had the 08 and now I have the 2010, and it does not run any cooler than my 08.

they just say in the book that it is 85% more efficient/not 85% more effective..i am sure the 07-09 bikes are fine..as duc have sold lots of them and alot have been tuned for more hp etc

Thanks for clearing it up. Was all worried after seeing how big the new oil coolers are! I may go bigger anyway as it gets pretty hot here is summer!

On my 2008 model temps of 145+ deg were being reached in heavy traffic and made me feel uncomfortable, causing me to predjudice safe riding practice to keep air flowing through the cooler.
The manual states that temps of 170+ deg will show up as HI on the display and the bike should not be ridden. I reckon too much heat in the oil affects its performance and longevity.
I now have a new 2009 model and have ordered the SC project larger oil cooler. I figure I can always partially block it in winter but keep extra cooling capacity in reserve for high summer. I believe the cat converter also affects heat buildup and have ordered the Leo Vince cat eliminator.

Would be a plus if they put a thermostat on either for when the cooler riding season arrives...Sos we don't wrap the cooler to gain some much needed heat to prevent the sight glass from getting funky,,,

I've ridden both my hyper in low 40 degree heat and my old k8 z1000 the hyper ran hotter but was much more bareable.
Being open and air cooled the heat dicipates in all directions as opposed to the zed that just pushed hot air straight out the baclk of the radiator and on to my thighs
Slightly off topic but....

Last summer in Texas we had 90 plus days of 100 or high and my 2008 Hyper never had an over heating issue even in stop and go traffic. To be on the safe side I trade up to a 2010 EVO SP for the bigger cooler

I've gotten into the 240's on track days and high 230's quick mountain riding. I don't like letting the engine get that hot and would love a larger oil cooler that doesn't cost $600.
