Slipper Clutch issues

Ok so the other day I riding north on I-15 getting ready to exit and came into some traffic. I down shifted to manage speed and when I did it felt like my clutch gave out. I gave it some throttle and it was just slipping horribly. I was able to limp it to a gas station where my buddy picked me up and we checked out the bike in his garage. Upon taking off the clutch cover we noticed that the top friction plate some how or another jumped out of the basket and the teeth were on top of the basket. Has anyone here ever had this problem, heard of this problem, or have any idea as to how this could have came about. If it is mechanic error throw it out there as it wont hurt my feelings. (I didnt install it). The slipper clutch is a yoyodyne.

Hi,
I have the Yoyodyne on my Hyper as well and race it. *So far no problems. *However, I have an STM on my 748R and it had a problem similar to what you are describing. *In my case it was the primary nut that secures the whole clutch basket assembly to the driving shaft that backed off and came loose. *Damage was limited but we are replacing the both the belleville washer and the spider spring as part of the overhaul.

The springs in the pressure plate should hold back the plates and the slave has a limit on the stroke. *Even if the balls dropped out of the slipper, the plates would have only been loose, not free of the basket. *I would not have guessed the nut backing off would be an option till it happened to me during a race.

If you find out what the problem was, please let me know. * *

Found out what the problem was. My friend who I had install it had absolutely no clue as to how to install it properlly. The first two plates he had in were metal plates. The first being the slightly thinner one. That plate managed to get underneath the clutch hub. And then when he stacked the plates he had a fiber plate as the last plate and it was too close to the end of the hub/basket on popped out ontop of the basket. It is allmost as if he installed the pack bassackwards.

After getting the clutch pack sorted out, how does it work now? Aloha Alex
