Hyper swingarm switch to Monster trellis version

Just saw a picture on a website that gave me a diabolical idea for a modification to the hyper... now I need technical minds to help me sort through this, and understand how realistic it is.

In the pic attached, a rendering of the hyper is done with a swingarm that reminds me a lot of the old monster trellis swingarm... would this be a possible switch for the hyper? I know that aesthetically I would love it, would match the frame, and look really trick. What I'm wondering is if the length is different, and what it would do to the handling.

can more knowledgeable minds than mine give some input? Pic attached

I had the same idea - it's only been done once or twice that I'm aware of. Your basic problem is that the Hyper is a narrow case and the Monster is a wide case and the Hyper houses it's bearings in the swingarm and the monster has it's bearings in the case. There's also a one inch difference with the ID of the swingarm of the Monster being wider but with near identical OD's at the pivot.

I bought the swingarm already and my friend Chris has looked at it with me. We have a plan for how to do the conversion but it's far from being a simple swap. Basically the shock mounts need machining but to what degree we're not sure yet. The swingarm it's self will need to be machined to allow for needle bearings on the left side and radial rollers on the right similar to what the Hyper uses. It may be possible to make only these changes and then machine spacers to include side thrust bearings but until we get them both apart and do really precise measuring we won't know.

I'll probably start my transplant in a few weeks and I've got a build thread going and I'll detail the whole procedure. Look for Hyperstrada to see the one bike it's been done on:

i knew it was going to be much harder than i thought... oh well, i'll follow your lead. I remember that hyperstrada concept, love the look... they should have painted the swingarm red though.

send me a PM when you start your thread.... looking forward to seeing your progress.

Just emailed Style & Performance in italy who made the Hyperstrada concept you refer to... checking to see if they sell a ready-modified swingarm to mount on the hyper. Will let you know if I get an answer. (italy is on vacation for all of august... so, it will be a waiting game)

Did that a while ago:

Hi Gregor and thanks for your interest in our productions.
However, sorry to say the S4R swingarm on Hyperstrada is totally a workshop operation, so it's hard or impossible to give a 'D.I.Y. kit' in box. We made custom spacers, custom pieces and suspension modifying. In other words, we can re-make the application only by us.

Anycase thanks and hope to be useful for any other possible thing.

Best regards,
Paolo Petrini
STYLE and PERFORMANCE S.n.C.

There's also a 748 that ran that swingarm up in the Pacific Northwest but I believe that was a different application or fabrication. I haven't spoken to the person who did the machining but from what I could see they used bronze bushings which, while fine on a vintage bike like my Rickman, won't hold up to the stresses that the Hyper will put into them. That's the reason for the needle bearings on one side.

My friend Chris has designed and built his own motorcycles and has done prototypes and design work for NASA so he's about as good as they get so when he's come up with the design it will be completely dialed. If it will be cost effective to duplicate I don't know. If it was I'm sure Style & Performance would be happy to do it.

Gregor

That looks very realistic to me. However, I think they took a Bimota DB6 frame and assembled the Hyper parts around it.

Ncr hyper

This was in the new cycle world they made there swing arm out of titanium. Wonder if they would sell these swing arms to the public. I did have to laugh though the article is all about weight reduction, if you look at the bike it looks as if it has a solo seat but the bike is shown with passenger pegs set up.

I wondered why they never showed the front end of it in the earlier pictures... But at Laguna Seca I saw it in all its glory... the front fender utterly ruins the bike in real life... its like a baby arm attached to a full size human. But the bike in general is astounding, but the proportion and styling of that front fender was such a let down to me when I say it.
