Advise/Help Rear Chain Guard

Hi I have a Monster M1100S, I am looking to fit the rear chain guard from the Hypermotard, this is the one that wraps around the rear sprocket.

Can anyone tell me how the guard is mounted. According to the Dealer the hub is the same on the Monster and Hypermotard, but when I looked at my hub I could see no mounting holes for the bracket.

Having fitted a chain oiler and getting oil everywhere even on minimum feed the manufacturer asked me to send pictures of the install. They advised that the problem was due to the Monsters chain guard being too short in fact it does not even go near the rear sprocket, since oil is only flung off the chain between 12 - 6 O'clock positions on the the rear sprocket this is the only solution I have. Many thanks in advance and if anyone has any photo's of the mounting I would very much appreciate you posting them.

hyper chain guard

Here is a couple of pictures. Hope they help. I had to remove the guard after installing an STM quick change carrier for clearance issues. I intend on putting it back on. Just have to do a little grinding on the steel mounting bracket. Pictures show the guard and mount together and last picture shows
the top mounting hole just above the eccentric clamp.

Thank you both very much for your help.

It looks like the mounting holes are threaded in the Hub between the chain tension adjuster teeth "if you know what I mean". I don't think I have any holes in my hub, but I will check again, if not its out with the drill.

Can either of you tell me how long the mounting bolts are? I can then have an idea how far to drill .

Ditch the chain oiler.

You don't need it and it just makes a mess. It's an o-ring chain, internally lubricated. You only need to add WD-40 to the outside of the chain occasionally for cleaning and rust control/removal.

That said, this thread will probably be locked by AM tomorrow.

Mounting bolt part#77510331B which is listed as a M5 x 12mm long.
It seems like when I did the quick change carrier and had the guard off,
I had to use a flat washer to mimic the thickness of the guard bracket.
The bolt was close to bottoming in the hole without the bracket or washer.
I would proceed with caution on drilling and tapping new holes in that swingarm. Mighty expensive to replace if something goes wrong.
I would have to agree with decreasing dave on the oiler. In a street application with a sealed o-ring chain, external lubrication needs are minimal.
I've got 6800 miles on the current chain with very little lube applied and the
chain is in great shape. Good luck and PM me if you want to chat further on this.

Not true...

I have 15000 miles on a chain and sprockets with an oiler. I did the don't bother thing and just wipe it before, don't think I got 2000 out of the chain.

You probably missed the locking of an oil-related thread last year and the ensuing
fracas. Ever since then, any mention of oil brings out comments related
to thread-locking, which I believe has only happened one time in the Hyper
section.

BTW, the OEM Hyper chain is not known for its long life. It is a D.I.D., but not
one of their higher-end units.

Fair enough, however, I had 20,000 miles on my original chain on my Yamaha R1 with plenty of clutch-up highway wheelies and drag racing starts. That chain ONLY saw WD-40 once a week to keep it cleaned and noise-free.

Obviously, YMMV. Maybe because I live in a dry climate??

The oil locking comment was just what dave said and no reflection on you.

If only We get more wet days than dry and even then they complain that we're in a drought.
This IS what kills chains over here and you have to agree they are not cheap @ £200 or $300. Anyhow each to their own.

Was unaware of the oil war previously, my bad, but then I'm off the Monster Forum
