Maintenace Cost for the Hyper
I've been considering a Hyper for a while now and its on my short list of bikes if I can find a great one at a decent price used (which I have been seeing lately). That said, I've searched the forum for the cost to maintain one but aside from the 7,500 mile service I haven't found much more info. Does anyone who's put a lot of miles have some more info on what its cost them to keep the bike going?
I currently have a SV650 and do all the maintenance myself. Not sure if I would want to venture into the world of shims and belts (may save that for the dealer) but in no way am I going to have a dealer change the oil, filters, plugs and brake fluid in my bike. I put about 12k miles/year on the SV, but if I get the Hyper the SV is either going to the GF or going to become my track only bike.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well, if I couldn't do it myself I couldn't afford the bike and would not have bought it. Oil and even belt checks are simple and no reason to go to the dealer unless you have $$ to burn. The valves are no harder than a shim/bucket 4-stroke (actually less work as the cams do not have to come out) just a bit different. A clearance check is also fairly easy, biggest hassle is removing the tank. From what the techs tell me, and what I see on my bike, they don't often move unless you frequent the rev limiter. If you were to take the bike in for a full 12-15K service with belt replacements, and valve adjustment where a few shims were needed, it would be around $600 - $800, so they tell me here.

Checking the valves can be pretty easy. Here is a video for a 2 valve:

I took mine in for the 7500 service and said valves and belts only, the rest I'll do myself. $350 later I was out of the dealer. Once the warranty is up, I'll take her to my favorite local indy and it'll probably be a good bit cheaper than that.
It's really not that bad. Especially when you consider how effin fun this bike is

It's only bad when you consider dudes like me that have absolutely zero interest and possibly less talent for, wrenching. You may even catch me frowning when I have to adjust the mirrors. I just wanna ride!!!

I actually enjoy maintaining the bike as much as I do riding it ... have not done a belt change or valve adjustment yet but I am looking forward to tackling it when the time comes ... the only thing I won't or can't do is tire replacements ... good luck with your decision.

Those are all good questions. I am able to afford the Hyper if I do the rountine stuff myself. The valve stuff I have taken to the dealer. Here is a breakdown so far.
600 mile service: $160
7500 mile service: $450
5 oil changes (myself): $55 each
Brake/Clutch oil change: $40 MityVac, and $10 oil. Change twice myself.
Tires: $250 a set, find deals, and I need them after 4k miles.
Upgrades and Accessories: $$$$
I'm at 11,200mi on my Hyper and love it! Soon, I will get racks made up to handle some panniers.
Go for it, do your own wrenching, and enjoy the bike!

The idea of expensive maintenance is pretty much a thing of the past, unless you think spending more than an oil change is over extending yourself.
You'll spend more on tires then anything else. Now if that was only the case with my 916/996.

Ooh when you do, let me know. I'd love to be able to mount up some pelican cases for trips.
