On a serious note, my insurance is based mainly on cc's. If I had a 796 rather than my 1100 it would save me probably enough to mod up a 796.

Yeah, same here, my choice of bike is partly insurance related.
And me hating the dry clutch noise
And any fortunes spent on mods, Is just what I would do on any bike really
And my computers, and my car etc etc

The 1100 doesn't really put out that much more HP than the 796. It's the torque that the 1100 has it all over the 796. The powerband and the torque curve is what makes the Hypermotard 1100 so much fun to ride. The 1100 DS engine is arguably the "perfect" motorcycle engine.

I am a long time supermoto rider and purchased a 796 because I dont beleive that a Motard needs a shit load of power, Im all about lightweight useable power. I ride with a ton of Suzuki sv650s wich are awsome lightweight twins and my 796 blows them away. Its all preference and weather you have a 796 or 1100 you gonna want them to run the best witch means doing Mods!!!

If your reframe that question and ask simply: 'Why do people buy motorcycles and then try to improve all aspects of perfromance instead of leaving them stock?" and the answer becomes evident, ie people who buy the 796 aren't trying to make them 1100's, as much as they're trying to improve or cutomise to their liking the stock bike. Nothing wrong with that. People who buy 1100's try to improve their bikes too, yes?

That's not the same question. The point is, there are two ways to get a Hypermotard with 1100 performance: buy an 1100, or buy a 796 and modify it. The fact that all bikes can be modified doesn't address the issue of determining the merits of each method.
I recently read a review of an exhaust system for the 796, which ended with the same question: Why not take the money you would spend for the exhaust and just buy the 1100? Some of the responses here are informative with respect to insurance and the wet clutch.
