Magazines, advertisers, writers

Quite an interesting article at

http://hellforleathermagazine.com/20...orcyclist.html

tracking Motorcyclist magazine's apparent response to advertiser pressure.

I'm mulling over my own reaction (cancel? write a letter to the editor? shrug?) and thought I'd throw it out for comments from the peanut gallery here.

I read the article last week and it really pissed me off at first. I thought about canceling... but then I realized that every magazine probably caves to the same pressure. Those guys were just the first to be exposed in a very public way.

a few thoughts on this topic:
  • if it all was true, dexter ford will most likely land an even better gig
  • if it all was not true, it was a great way for the magazine to get some ink (no news is bad news)
  • there are a lot of much more important issues in the world at present, to spend time discussing

Don't believe everything you read, especially on the internet.

Thanks for posting the link - makes for interesting talk about ethics and morals and money and what's important...and what's not.

I'd be interested to see a revision history between the Snell2005 and Snell2010 standards.

I think Ford put together some nice stuff on helmets. Doesn't mean that it is all perfect, just a different perspective. I doubt that anyone is going to die because they chose to wear one helmet over the next. There are too many other varialbles to consider as well.

I have been on motorcycles for 33 years and wrecked plenty in the dirt, but never in the street. Interestingly enough, there were very few times that I bounced my head on the ground. The one time I did, I had on on of those chicken shit open face helmets, you know the ones that were the only readily available option back in the day. Well, I am not even sure that Snell existed, but I do know it wasn't long after that I got my first full faced helmet.

I think you wear what you like, what fits, and what is affordable and hopefully it will be enough when called upon.

I am due for a new lid and I usually go with something that is comfortable, low noise, and priced in the middle. I was thinking of the new Shoei X-twelve, but can't see spending $600.

Out!
