Brand New Hyper 796, battery issue
Hi All,
I just picked up a new Hypermotard 796 last week. Well, after riding it home, leaving it in the garage for 2 days, i went to start her up and all I hear was a clicking sound. I used the onboard computer to see the battery voltage and it was flashing 11.7. I went and bought a battery tender, connected it, and was able to start it after a few hours on the charger. Took it by the dealer so they could do a load test on the battery, they said it was a bit low but the charger will take care of it. Now again, after not riding for 2 days, AND connected to the charger at all times, the bike won't start. Voltage is 11.8 to 12.0. Is this a bad battery, regulator, or what. Any thoughts? Anybody have a similar problem with a new bike? Thanks for your help!

My batt was weak from day one, it would start but crank slowly (I thought it was normal). It died after 1 1/2 years and 20 K+ miles. Batteries last me 4+ years, this new battery noticeable improvement.

Just a thought but are you taking your key out in the lock position or the park position? If you take your key out in park a small light in the headlight assembly is turned on. Maybe having that on even though it was on the charger kept it from fully charging. Are there status lights on your charger?

Hi Nginear,
Yup, always made sure I didn't have the park lights on. I am getting all the status lights when i turn on the ignition, that's how i was able to see the battery voltage from the computer. It's now dropped to 11.7 (while still connected to the battery tender which is showing it fully charged!)

Yup, I agree.
Did they charge it before you picked it up? When I bought mine I had to wait untill the afternoon before I could take it home because they wanted to charge the battery.

Thanks everyone. The dealer came by to pick it up but wanted to try swapping out the battery. He did, and it fired right up. He said to watch it for a few days and see if that solved the problem. I am curious what reading you all are getting on the onboard computer for voltage via the ducati onboard computer before you start up your bikes for the first time for the day? I'm getting 12.2V, isn't that still low?

It seems close but I don't remember and can't check mine since I'm away from home working. Remember that when you turn it on you head light comes on and fuel pump prime so it puts a load on your battery so it might bring it down.
Just make sure to give it a good charge on your home charger and check again

12 + isn't bad considering the fuel pump, ecu, injectors, sensors, flapper (1100), lights, are on too. 13.6/8 about average with multi meter & system off @ the battery.

Awesome, thanks again for all the input guys, I was able to start her up. I'll leave it for 3 days and see if I can start it up again (Don't want to get stuck somewhere off of Highway 1 with a dead battery). Ride safe!
