Check engine light on 796, 1100 miles
I went for a couple hour ride today up in the mountains and on the way back into town the check engine light came on. I didn't notice any change in the behavior of the engine while riding. It starts and idles fine.
Any ideas? Anyway i can find out the code it is showning without software? I just called my dealer and they can't look at it until tuesday, which unfortunatly i have to leave for work on tuesday morning for 3 weeks so no dice getting it in.

It happened to me too - and right about at the same mileage too. The mileage might be a coincidence, but the rest I think isn't. I think the electronics are glitchy on this thing. The neutral light seems to have a life of its own sometimes too. Anyhoo, I checked my bike for a code and there was none. The light stayed on for 20 miles or so for me, and then went off. Haven't seen it since (that was about 1,500 miles ago).

I assume the 796 is the same as the 1100. On the 1100, when you are stopped, you toggle the meter select lever backwards as you would check the exact idle speed. When the check engine light is on, instead of the idle, you will see the code. You can then decode it by looking it up in your owner's manual.

Alright, I checked the battery connections and they are all tight. I've gone into the sub menu while the bike was off and also while running and there are no codes shown on the rpm screen. I'll try riding around a little more before I leave for work to see if it goes off on it's own. But after that I'm just gonna have to bring her in.

My light goes on sometimes as well, not during riding but when I put in the key and turn it over the light goes on after the electronics goes through the "ignition on routine".
Sometimes I have to remove the key completely once or twice before it goes off, I suspect it might be the immobilizer or something as I usually have my car key on me, maybe it picks up the rfid off the car key?
Or could it be the sidestand switch as im not able to start the bike with the light on?
Not able to start despite being in neutral or not.
Going to bring this up with the dealer next time I go there, on top with a little annoyance with the front forks that bottoms way too easily

Well the light went off by itself. Rode about 50 miles with it on then stopped for an appoinment and when I turned her back on it was gone.
The neutral light on mine is a little tricky. I know the bike is in neutral I just have to slightly move the lever and then the light comes on. Basically half shift up from first into neutral, then slightly press down again and my light pops right on.

Neutral lights are not to be trusted, many threads on dropped bikes too

Well my CEL light is back and no code shown on the rpm sub-menu just like last time. I've gone close to 70 miles this time and it is stillon. Time to make a dealer appointment.

My buddy just bought a Hypermotard 1100 EVO SP and it's been acting up and it only has about 650 miles on it. The neutral light doesn't work, it died at an intersection once, the throttle grip is rubbing on the handguard and not going back to the closed position, and Saturday his engine light came on. At first, the bike lost power and ran rough, so he pulled over to the side of the road. We eventually got it about 1/4 mile down the road and after turning the ignition switch off and on a few times to check it, it reset. He got another 10 miles down the road and the engine light came on and the bike died. Messed around with it some more, it reset, and he rode it another 40 miles back home. Last I heard, he was going to take it for a spin this evening to see if the light will come back on.
He's been wanting a Hyper since they first came out and I feel bad for him (especailly after always teasing and pushing him to buy one). Between issues with the dealer after the sale, his insurance company hugely misquoting his annual fees (today he's been currently looking for another insurance company), and the issues with the bike, he's about ready to drive it through the display window at the dealership.
