Hyper v Monster

I have been thinking latley of changing my hyper to a 1100 monster and I thought that i would ask advice on this site. Maybe there is someone who has changed from a monster to a hyper and they would be able to speak from experiance about the pro's and con's

I haven't changed, nor have I owned a Monster, but my Father-in-Law does and it lives at my house (the bike).

His bike is only an M620 (little Italian guy [the man]) but the only difference that I could perceive, especially with the same motors between the M1100 and the Hyper is the riding position and their respective attributes.

The Hyper gives you a dirtbike-type riding position which can afford you the flickability of a supermoto due to the leverage of the position but to some will give you a bit of a disconnected feeling that most sportbike guys are used to (myself included).

The M1100 is going to be more sportbike oriented in its riding position and for some, give them the sportbike connection to the front wheel that they need (myself included). The M1100 will require you to ride it like a sportbike (knee out) vs. a SuMo due to your positioning on the bike.

I live in Arizona and the roads are far too straight for my liking. A motorcycle accident in 4/09 messed up my lower back to where even riding a Monster for several hours has me feeling it due to bouncing over the straight roads while locked into one position on the bike (as opposed to moving around as if riding the twisties), but not on the Hyper.

Even given that, I fell in love with the Cali roads and even make trips back just to ride them. Their roads beg for Hypers and their flickability vs. a Monster IMHO. That, and I race SuMo and ride dirtbikes as well as roadrace, so I guess I can go either way.

Good luck,
Dave

i had a '09 M1100 for 8 mths and subsequently traded it for '08 Hyper which I have had for 3 mths now.... I purchased both bikes new. The monster had 9 miles on it, my hyper had 5 at the time of delivery

Monster Pros (personal experience only)
- riding experience is great, I never felt like I was riding on the bike... all I could see was the road... look and thats where the bike goes... I felt very in-sync with the bike. I think, it goes... it was a great feeling

Monster Cons (personal experience only)
- riding ergonomics on the M1100 are very sport bike oriented. This is why I traded the bike in. the riding position may not be as aggressive as say an 848 or 1198, but it was definitely more than my Ninja 650r was. I tried to change this by switching seats, switching handlebars, and even lowering the pegs. In the end, I was felt I was trying to make the Monster something it wasnt... a bike with a "standard" riding position.

Monster/Hyper comparisons (again, personal experience only)
- engine... both bikes have basically the same platform, the DS1100. I have found that my Hyper revs a bit higher than the Monster did, not sure if its a difference in Cams, or what not, but I dont hit the rev limiter as often as I did on the Monster
- brakes... both bikes were base models, and my understanding is, the brakes on both are basically the same. Both work exceptionally well... I have no complaints
- riding position... Riding up on the tank on the monster will hurt (search Monster Balls to see why), but riding up on the tank on the Hyper is extremely comfortable and feels very agile.

Now its important to note, my M1100 was all but stock. I didnt change much on it other than add sliders and play with the ergos... On the flip side, my Hyper is not stock at all. The hyper has the Termi 2in1 race setup, 6.4 gall tank, DP Racing seat, windscreen, and lots of custom paint. As a result, its not a true apples to apples comparison, but I hope this helps.

Just remember, this is just my observations, and experiences. I expect others will be able to provide more to the conversation

I currently own a Hyper with slip on and a racing ecu. I took a demo a1100S Monster with termis slip on for a ride. The Monster is lighter and feels lighter and has a little bit more power because of the bigger airbox. I really liked the Monster it handles very nice and like mentioned before it feels more like a sportbike. The monster also seats lower.

I though about a trade, but both bikes have the same engine and they handle very nice just different styles. The main reason I didn't do the trade is that the Hyper has better looks than the Monster. I think the hyper is more hooligan.

Thanks very much lads for those honest coments. After reading them i reminded myself that the reason that i got the hyper was because i was getting stiff on the fire blade. I did sit on on of the monsters at the bike show and thought that she was more like a sports bike. i see that they have raised the bars on the new 796. It may not make a big difference. You kown how it is. Bikers seem to be hard to content with the one bike. Regards

I think the Monster is more comfortable but The Hyper is definitely cooler looking IMO. When my wife get's her motorcycle license I going to talk her into the 796 so I can ride it hehe.
