Warning mivv exhaust dangerous
Today I was running North on I-5 into Seattle when I felt a thump and heard grinding undert the tail of the bike. As I slowed and pulled to the sholder I could see gas spraying onto the freeway and could feel it spraying all over my left leg. I immediately shut off the ignition and stopped. My immentiate observation was that the MIVV taillight bracket was gone, snapped of clean by the rear tire. The license plate, tail light and about 9 inches of bracket had hit the rear tire flipping the thoes components into the fuel pump breaking the fuel pump cover and causing a rupture letting fuel pump out onto the ground (and my leg). The bracket ripped about 5-6 inches of carbon fiber off the hugger and smacking into my brand new Ohlins rear shock. As near as I can tell the bracket missed tearing into my leg by mear inches. The wiring for the tail light was stripped bear for several inches and was dangling under the tail of the bike. Why the gas did not ignite and explode I don't know, but it had to do with a hole lot of luck. I poored about a half cup of fuel from my riding boot. I have no idea where broken piece of the bracket bracket landed went because of the heavy traffic. I intend to look for it early tomorrow morning when the traffic is at its lightest.
My 2008 Hyper has about 3200 total miles on a MIVV Souno carbon fiber slipon exhaust. The slipon package includes a mounting brack, and a license plate bracket. The mounting bracket is a neat looking slab of stainless steel that holds both the license plate and a tail light. In the manufacturing process MIVV lazer cut a logo into the stainless steel leaving very little steel to hold the plate. The best I can surmize is the a combination of wind buffet from the license place, vibration from the road and the resulting harmonics caused the mounting bracket to fail in the weakest part of the logo cutout.
Given the three day weekend I was unable to contact MIVV, but though I would warn everyone with MIVV slipons of this potentially catastropic defect in the tail light bracket. I should also mention that the mounting bracket for the slipon also failed when the bike had about 50 miles on it due to faulty manufacturing. You micht want to be aware of the potential for problems with that item as well.
The slipon is a great piece of technology that is well constructed and produces exellent performance results. The mounting brackets are another matter. In my opinion, the brackets are thoughtlessly designed and manufactured and possess the potential to cause fatal injuries. Given the poor craftsmanship of the brackets it is certainly foreeable that a number of bad scenarios could stemm from from this faulty product.
I bwould recommend that MIVV owers check the rear mounting brackets for defects as soon as possible. I intend to constact MIVV about this malfunction as soon as possible.
Thanks to the great folks at Ducati Seattle for coming to my rescue today.

I have the Ti MIVV exhaust. I shortened the tail light/license plate bracket when I installed it to avoid possible contact with the tire and hopefully, cracks caused by vibration. So far so good, with a couple of thousand miles with this exhaust.

I decided to do the same thing after I get the fuel pump fixed. It is simple and elegant. Thanks

My only problems are with the brackets that MIVV uses. The slipon is excellent; constructed well and provides a lot of additional performance.

I should have elaborated, I also saw the thread on SMJ and have seen other quality issues with the MIVV build quality on the Zed forum also.
Its a shame, I think their all carbon pipe is the best looking.
