After a few miles....

Hi All,
Looking for some tips from some owners on any eccentricities Hypermotards may develope after a few miles.
I can't afford a brand spankin' new Hypermotard, so Im looking at used ones. Luckily, me being in Italy, there are some deals to be had.... that being said, some deals sound to good to be true and I'm wondering if there are any reasons other than obvious stuff like accidents and drops that Hypers might go for less than normal.... like $$$ for a manditory sevicing after X-miles.

I.e. About half of the 2008/2007 1100's with anywhere between 4000-12000 Km, seem to be selling for 4-5K (Euro's). That seems cheap to me considering I paid 3K for my 2002 Honda Hornet with 9000Km.

I dunno, you all seem pretty happy with them and I haven't heard anything bad, but thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks in advance,
J

Stick with the Hornet then...
They're a good, classless, reliable, easy to ride bike.

The air cooled 1078cc air cooled, fitted in the Hyper, is pretty much bullet proof, and is the end product of a long line of air cooled twins Ducati has produced.
Reliable, and Italian, so it's not as smooth to ride as a Panasonic, but it will get you where you need to be.

Thats interesting, i really want to get Hypermotard (chop in my S1000RR for it) but need it for commuting also, i am borrowing one shortly and i did wonder about the reliabilty. I am only going off my experiance of Ducati from the mid 90's and i like it when manufacturers use an engine for a long time as it means they dont have trouble with them.

Let me re-phrase that: I can't afford to buy a new Hypermotard BEFORE I leave Italy... maintanence costs arent really what I was wondering about. Some bikes, regardless of make or model sometimes develop problems later in life (or sooner) and I was curious to know if that was the case with the Hypermotard.

Im not put off of Ducati history either... I grew up on BSA Thunderbolts (Just inherited my dad's '69!) and Norton Commandos... so Im no stranger to moody motorbikes.

At the end of the day, I just want to be as informed as possible before I go harrasing sellers.

I bought a used 08 standard last summer with 7200 miles on it. I now have about 10500 miles and I have not had a single reliability issue (knock on wood). And it hasn't had an easy life either. The previous owner used to take it to the track regularly and beat on it pretty hard and I have had it to three track days this year. All the servicing has been done as required either by me or the local dealership and the valves were in spec at 7500 miles.

The only significant reliability issues I have seen from this board and others has been a few isolated items.

my only problems were a "water temp sensor" and the wire chaffing that runs under the seat support causing the head light to stay on all the time. the water temp sensor as ducati calls it is the low fuel sensor. if it goes bad the low fuel light blinks all the time but doesn't start to count. still waiting for the sensor have ran out of fuel twice when i forgot to reset on fill ups.

Well then that would explain the blinking light during your videos of the East Coast meet then.

Thanks guys! This is the kind of stuff I wanted to know. I did find a site with some recall items on the Hypermotard.... nothing crazy though. '07's had a bum license plate mounting post or something and some '08's had an issue with the battery sliding around, causing the posts to short out, thus shutting down the engine.... apparently the dealer fix was some velcro straps LOL!
