Adjusting my valves

Well, it's time.

7500 mile service is due; and I'm not willing to pay someone to work on my bike. Especially someone that I don't personally know, and not someone I can claim to trust.

I really only do work myself; if I mess it up, then I pay for it. That's always been fine. I've rebuilt motors, I've built track bikes etc..I have the motosuite book, and I've done a ton of research. It really doesn't seem hard, just a little backwards.

A buddy and I have the bike down to pulling the valve covers in about an hour and a half and took a ride around town to pickup some stuff. Metric feeler gauges, and some NGK plat. plugs..Turns out autozone not only stocks the plugs; but they only want 6.99 for each..Not bad at all.

I figure I'll get the bike together just to make sure all is well; then pull it back apart for flywheel and rearsets.

If anyone has any tips or insight when it comes valve check time, feel free to give me some advice. it's always appreciated.

Are what I'm following for now. the only issue so far is the hyper doesn't have a sight glass, but a plug you pull. and I fail to see the arrows also. I figure I'l find TDC when the piston is on the top, and both valves are closed.

Have fun. It's not hard and the chance are that at the first 7500 mile service, you won't need to shim anything.

absolute cake to check the valves....here's what I've come up with.

Horizontal cylinder:

ex opener .002
closer .000

intake opener .004
closer .003

verticle cylinder
ex opener .003
closer .001

intake opener .004
closer .003

So it looks as if I'm due for adjustment.

according to the clearence guide here: http://www.ducatisuite.com/valves.html

it shows my horizontal cylinder exhaust opener is tight by .002, and intake closer is loose by .002

my verticle cylinder exhaust opener is tight by .001, and intake closer is loose by .002 also

I noted the numbers on the shims, and will get with my local dealer and go over them, and see what new shims I need.

one issue, my horizontal cylinder's exhaust opener shim DID NOT have any numbers are markings. slightly under it, there were some numbers, but I believe to be inscriptions on the valve stem, not the shim like the others. any advice?

From the Hyper service manual:

Openers

With the valve in the rest position, slide a feeler gauge between opening rocker arm and shim to measure clearance.
Values must be as follows:

Opening rocker arm
Intake: (A)
Nominal 0.10-0.15 mm
In operation 0.05-0.15 mm
Exhaust: (A)
Nominal 0.10-0.15 mm
In operation 0.05-0.15 mm

Closers

With the valve in the rest position, slide a feeler gauge between closing rocker arm and shim to measure clearance. Clearance must be within the specified limits:

Closing rocker arm
Intake: (B)
Nominal 0-0.05 mm
In operation 0-0.20 mm
Exhaust: (B)
Nominal 0-0.05 mm
In operation 0-0.20 mm

forgive me, but the wording, "within operation" would be the parameters of which the valve is allowed to be looser/tighter, correct?

In your opinion, based on the metric conversion, my intake closers need to be adjusted, or should be ok?

cheers! Joe

When I converted it to inches I get:

In operation 0.05-0.15 mm 0.0020 - 0.0059 inches for the openers
In operation 0-0.20 mm 0.0000 - 0.0079 inches for the closers

And from the specifications section of the manual it reads "Max Allowed Value" for the "In operation" values. From the figures you gave I don't think you need to adjust anything, but I am not a Ducati Service tech. I also have read that to mean, what acceptable without adjusting and what you would shim it to if it fell outside those numbers.

This thread shows where the service manual can be downloaded. downloadable .pdf 08 hym1100 service manual?
