Just Did the AirBox Mod..Wow!
I finally got around to tackling this air box mod ive been reading about on the forum...and was a little hesitant cuz of the hassle involved with taking off the tank as i experienced with my Multistrada..after completing it i have to say it was pretty easy...didnt even have to take the tank off, just remove the tank strap and the front rubber stoppers and i was able to lift the front enough to get the lid off and pop in a KN...just "dremel'd" out a 2" hole over the new filter and presto...done..the whole thing took maybe an hour..and it really does make a difference. the throttle response is much better and the engine snaps when blipped...
It totally blows me away looking at the stock air inlet, its sooo small...there is no way that u could run this little air with out the aid of a fuel computer vs carbs... no wonder people have problems with stalling..this thing must be tuned to the absolute lowest output possible and still keep it running...nice job Ducati engineers.. seriously.
needless to say im now running a DP ECU with a bumped up trim and reset TPS...the leo cat bypass goes on tomorrow and more fine tuning to come...Now im starting to like this bike..

Good on ya mate.
Sounds like your getting the hang of this...
Are you really still gonna fit that LV cat' eliminator?
It'll be worth more unspoiled...

like most things new..it always seems more difficult tlll u actually do it...
Im still going to slap on the leo cat bypass...im mean its sitting in front of me..hard to resist not installing it.. and BTW.. this thing is pretty inexpensive to start with..and nicely made too..
Also, when i changed the lid and filter the exhaust definitely stepped up in tone and volume...i can imagine it will really wake up once that underbelly lump of metal is off my bike

I've done both - airbox mod (with BMC filter) and the Leo Cat eliminator. I am convinced that it is the best we can do without changing systems, adding a slip-on or modifying the oem cans (which I am considering). It runs like the dickens! YEE-HAW! And, yea 2005multi - the Leo CE seems to shed 5 pounds. SAWEET!

Let us know what you had to do to install the LV Cat elim...
Can you get it on with just loosening the front pipe??

Just got finished installing the leo-cat bypass...I'm happy to say that it was really easy and only had to remove the front cyl. header to get it installed. I have a ZARD TOP GUN slip on and did not have to remove it. I just loosened the clamp holding it to the down pipe with the flapper valve. I then loosened all the clamps holding the cat in place and after removing the bolt that holds it to the frame it just dropped out...]
Next i loosely assembled the cat bypass just to get a idea of what fitment issues i might have(there weren't any)... once all that was sorted out i put a light coating of the orange high-temp sealant on all the male end of the joints which not only acts as a sealant but makes a GREAT lubricant and is KEY to getting all the pieces to slide together with out binding cuz the tolerances are really close..u must work fast though the stuff starts getting tacky pretty quick when its a thin smear(*** on a side note keep rags handy cuz this stuff is really messy and will get all over the bike before you know it...)..Highest praise to the fit and finish of these pipes...everything went together really smoothly with out any problems. Too bad i couldn't get it in titanium as its a really nice sculpture of pipe...ill post some pics later...

just to add on the kat eliminator and air box mod
Great articile 2005multi
did the kat change the note on the bike i hope to do a before you tube and after note with the leo-vince kat E and slip on tremi's +DP ECU ,I take it the bottom of the air box you modifed ?
You said "just "dremel'd" out a 2" hole over the new filter " what set up did you just leave the aircleaner in as a template and how did you use the dremel not a hole saw ?
do you have any images
Also quoting here "now running a DP ECU with a bumped up trim and reset TPS"
My tuner guy advised me that fitting the kat eliminator is with the proramiters of the DP ecu not sure with the air box mod as well
This tuner still wants to go though all my setting once all your work you have done
My bike was dynoed for poor running a dealer couldn't fix and he made the 1100S absolutely fly and sooo smooth no cantering
my kat goes on in next week as yours and good advice on the front header pipe
did you also have the DP air box lid mod ?

1. open top & bottom of air box install a K&N/BMC/ or DNA performance air filter
2. install cat eliminator
This is the most you can do without changing the ECU, it will run a little lean
but will still be safe, you will gain 5-6HP, have throatier exhaust note, better throttle response.
Step II (stock engine)
1. Buy the DP cams kit, comes with a new ECU, install just the ECU
2. now you can go to a full exhaust system or slip-ons,
3. Reset the TPS, this will get you another 2-3 HP
Step III (stock engine with cams)
1. install DP cams (at 7500mi) you will have to do the valve adjustment
anyways, so save some money.
2. Reset the TPS, this will get you another 2-3 HP and the motor will come
alive from mid to top.
Step IV (stock engine with cams & intake system)
1. Install intake system from Ducshop or TPO (Beast "R")
2. Install Power Commander and get a dyno mapping, as the bike will now run lean.
This set-upwill now add 4-6 HP this is where I would recommend that most normal people to stop,
as the bike will run GREAT!
Step V (all of the above + $$) Now it gets to be big $$$
This is for power nuts (like me) you can do.......
1. full porting with oversized intake valves, enlarged intake manifolds
2. High compression pistons stock bore (1078cc) or
3. Bigbore kit using 100mm HC pistons (1123cc)
4. lightened race crank, rods, flywheel (completely rebalanced)
5. Ceramic coatings on pistons & combustion chambers
6. Ceramic crankcase bearings
7. etc,etc,etc,
Step V will get you into the neighborhood of about 104-108 HP at the rear wheel! hope this helps,
