Using the Hyper as a track day bike

So I went and did a couple of days at the track on the Hyper and loved it. But it also got me in to thinking that I want more of a real track bike. So I started looking around but other than a 749 or 848 I didn't see anything I much wanted. So I'm back to the Hyper and some questions.

Hyper wheels are expensive! What are the cheapest way to get an extra set of wheels? What else will fit? One set for street/commuting and one set for the track or rains.

Anyone have an old seat they want to sell cheap? I'd like to mess around with it and make it a track monopost type seat. Anything with a cover torn or otherwise ugly?

I can only afford one bike right now so I have removing the rear plate bracket & lights down to a science. I still have to figure out rearsets.

Stop, you are falling down my same rat hole as I was also bitten by the track bug. You get to run ACC with STT and/or Putnam? How was it?

The cost to get all the track goodies adds up fast. By the time you do it, you could have bought a cheap track bike. That was my logic and that is why a 900ss is headed my way.

Ebay has stock seats pretty cheap.
Ducati Designs adjustable pegs are a cheap alternative to rear rearsets.
What, no BST wheels off of Ebay?

Enjoy the ride down mod lane.

I know...

The Hyper is a fun at the track but it's not the best track day bike. To heck with it. I'll just save my pennies this year and buy something in the winter.

Are you going to the Indy Ducati Day at the end of the month? I'll be there.

yep, 900ss or 1000ss from the wera board already race prepped for peanuts compared to what it would cost to put a hyper back together from a low-side.

I use an 03 R6 but will probably sell it next year for an SV650 already prepped.

I too took my hyper to the track and loved it except for two problems. One I kept feeling like I would be blown off on the half mile straight at Roebling Road. The other on tight turns my boot would drag a lot. I have big boots size 49 euro or 14 US! so I cannot get them any farther back and still have them on the pegs. I do have standard aluminum pegs off a Monster so it helped some but not enough.

My solution was a track prept SS 1000 DS. It is a lot better for both ground clearance and tucking in out of the wind. Besides it is track only so I no longer have to go through all the work for setting it up. Another benefit is I can spend the winters trying to reduce the weight.

I have been looking SV650s too. For the cost of an extra set of wheels and rearsets on the Hyper I can get a fully track/race prepped SV650 with a spare everything.

Yes they are excellent track day bikes. I just thought you wanted to stay with Ducati. The Kawasaki 650 twin is also a good choice but they are not as readily available.

The DP windscreen will help here...

Are you riding with the balls of your feet on the pegs?? I cannot see how you would hit your toes if you are on your balls (feet) and they are completely on the peg.

I've still touched a toe down at the same time as the peg on my racebike but my foot was hanging a bit of to the side.

I for one love the Hyper on the track. As quick as most through the corners, straightaways of course are a different story.

I spent less than $2500 for the track setup. Used EVR slipper clutch, Ohlins 25 mm cartridge, Ducshop stacks, Pro Taper bars.

I do want a second set of stock forged wheels so maybe $3500. total.

I love it on the track too. But for $2500 - 3500 I can get a dedicated jap track bike and when (not if) I crash it I won't really care that much and I won't have to get a second mortgage to fix it.

But I'd rather have the Ducati and my real preference would be to have a nice setup 749 for track only duty and take both. One on Saturday and one on Sunday but I am going to have a hard time swinging that right now so I plan to use what I have.
