Octane and your Hyper.....
What do you guys use and why??
Higher octane ratings do not mean more performance. In fact, they can mean less performance. You should be using the LOWEST octane rating you can without the detrimental pinging, pre-ignition, knocking, etc..
That said, what do you guys use on a DAILY basis.
Thanks,
Dave

I've been using premium (93 ron) because I have high compression pistons. is that wrong?
I use midgrade on the 749r

Actually, I think you mean 93 MON. I learned that through the research that I've been doing while trying to figure out if I need to run premium or not.
RON = Research Octane Rating (Euro manufactures)
MON = Minimum Octane Rating (US based)
We on the left coast don't have 93, we stop at 91.
....and yes, I think I would run 93 if I were you.

The manual recommends minimum 95.
I have always used premium 98 unleaded in all my bikes for years.
It's what most of use here down under.

ummm, I forgot about you guys when I made my poll. We don't use RON here in the states and I was just thinking that RON was just a "manufacturer term" vs. a practical octane measurement.
98 RON is equal to 90.5 MON here in the states.
95 RON is equal to 89 MON here in the states.
These are the recommended levels according to the manual. I was just curious what most were using and either why or if something other than premium, how it was working out for them.

i run regular as i havn't had any problems with it yet. will most likely step it up this summer when it gets warmer if i have detonation. the fjr runs fine on regular but the cbr runs crappy without 91 as a minimum.

Gas
I have found a noticeable increase in performance and mileage by using Shell 93 for my motorcycles and my high autos that required a higher octane rating. My cars that don't require a higher rating don't seem to benefit.
Hardest part here in the midwest is avoiding the 10% ethanol. Thankfully, Indiana is not as wedded to ethanol as much as Illinois.

I run 89 and think it actually runs better than when I was running 91. I tried 100 (there is actually a station that sells it close to me) before I figured out the MON RON thing, and it ran like shit.
