Anybody with hypermotard compare to Speed Triple 1050
I'm thinking of selling one or both of my ducs and getting a new 1050 speed triple. Any of you guys have one and want to compare it to the hypermotard? I've ridden the speed triple and except for my old track rs250 it was the most fun I've had on a motorcycle in about 5 years.

Is your Hypermotard in stock form?

I have a Daytona 955i, and it has been very reliable. Oil leaks? Come on now compared to a Ducati?
I think the 1050 Speed 3 will have a bit more midrange grunt than my older 955i, but still less top end. But wow, smooth linear, great power on the triple with a very distinct sound. And lets be honest the power of the 1050 will be much more than a 90HP Hyper. That said, the Hyper is more fun in town and anywhere on the street where you are not spending time at triple digit speeds because it has similar torque, but a few thousand RPM lower.
I would ride both and decide. I think the Hyper is much sexier, and that counts for a lot for an emotional purchase like a motorcycle.

Ive owned 6 Ducs over the last 25 years and none have leaked oil.
I don't think it's a common problem like it is on the 1050 triples.
I have 2 mates that have the 1050, one Speed Triple and the other a Tiger.
They both use, and leak enough oil to leave stains on the garage floor.
Other than that the 1050 is a stonking engine, reliable and makes great power and torque for an inline cylinder engine.
As Wilmar mentions peak torque is up around the 7-8000rpm range so they are not as street friendly as the Hyper but they have a shit load more top end.
I probably would buy one over a Jap 4 but I love my twins too much, plus I like my garage floor to be spotless

OK, to be fair yeah my 955i has left oil stains on the garage floor, and no the Hyper never has(though a friend has constant seepage from his MTS1000)... but after re-tightening many of the engine fasteners it stopped leaking... pretty much . But no more garage floor stains... of course I epoxy coated the floor and don't ride it but...Hey I am planning to sell it, so I need to present it in positive light.
Seriously, the triple makes an intoxicatingly good growl when revved, but therein lies the problem, it needs to be revved to enjoy. It is pretty much right in between a big twin and an inline four in power delivery, as would be expected.
IMO, other than power, is there anything that is better about the Speed triple for you?

Being a Hyper owner and having ridden my mates 'striple' only once, but for about an hour, I'll give you my 2c on the subject.
In comparison to my Hyper I'll say this...
Brakes are of equal standard but I have the standard hyper so I don't have experience with the monobloc set up like on the S.
The striple feels heavier because it is, but once your rolling that extra weight difference is negligible.
The Showa units on the striple are top notch.
In comparison to the hypers marshockings that's not surprising, but I don't bitch like a lot of fellaz here about the hypers forks because they just need to be set up properly and I find them adequate for street riding.
For me the Hyper is a shit load more comfortable than the striple but I'm on older bastard and need that extra leg room and upright riding position the hyper offers.
I felt cramped on the striple and couldn't wait to get back on the hyper to stretch my legs.
The hyper is a gorgeous bike compared to the striple which I think is just plain fugly IMO.
The striple feels easier to ride in traffic and I would put it on par with a Jap 4 for easy riding around town, where the heavier dry clutch and fuelling of the hyper can become a little tiresome in such situations.
My mates got the Arrow slip ons on his striple and although it sounds great it's nothing in comparison to the sound of a desmo twin with a good set of mufflers.
Lastly the striple has an extra 40 horses on the hyper and it feels like it.
If your into top end power the striple creams the hyper, but in the hypers defence, it makes all it power down low and right off the bottom and thats right where you want it for street riding
All that extra top end on the striple is useless if you can't exploit it and you just can't use it on the street if you want to keep your license

I have owned a Speed Triple and a Sprint ST and neither had a problem with oil leaks. My Hyper, on the other hand, had two oil leaks within the first 400 miles.

I have needed one under ALL my Ducs thus far and on many occasions ... and a lot more than that too!!
One guy here has 86000 km on his and races track on it too as, not missed a beat yet.
I have ridden the 1050 and rate it as a great bike, very nicely balanced too.
Certainly the triple has a beautiful howl so you wouldn't be disappointed with a good sound system on it.

But they were fixed under warranty and weren't long term probs?

Shit Monsta, you either have the worst luck, or Ducati send all there lemons to the Sth Island
Like with any manufacturer they produce good and bad builds... unfortunately.
I agree, any 1050 incarnation will be a very enjoyable ride if you can look past it's idiosyncrasies... like you have to do with any bike really.
