drain fuel tank?

How do you drain the fuel? I want to get this old gas out. Should I just siphon it? Does it really matter anyway? This gas is probably 6 months old or so.

I tried reading the service manual about removing the tank, but at some point in the instructions it says "make sure the tank is empty before doing this next part" or something like that.

Thanks,
-K

You could pull a line off the fuel pump and turn the key on/off multiple times while catching the gas. I've done this once, I would suggest sucking out as much gas as you can first

CA-Cycleworks has pretty good directions on how to do it.

http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/media/h...ion_Manual.pdf

USING THE FUEL PUMP TO DRAIN THE TANK (Optional)
Note: If you are not the adventurous type, you should leave this to the professionals. Some people, however, have to touch the electric fence just once to see what it’s like. This is one of those kinds of situations.

The relay closest to the metal bracket is the fuel pump relay.
It is continuously supplied +12V from the battery. It does not turn off with the keyswitch! This is always “hot” and is part of the reason the first instruction you read in about everything vehicular is to disconnect the battery! The way the fuel pump relay works is that when the ECU wants the fuel pump to run, it applies a connection to ground at the brown/black
wire. Should someone jumper this connection directly to ground, the pump will engage, regardless of what else the motorcycle is doing.
A person could route a large hose from the OUT fitting on the fuel fl ange to a fuel container, and the pump will empty the stock tank in under a minute. You will hear when the tank is empty by the change in sound from fuel pump.

It's also in the video

Does it smell or look funky? If not, top it off with new gas and ride it.

6 months aint that bad if you had a fuel conditioner in the tank. I would probably just ride it a ways until half empty, then top it off with fresh fuel and empty it and you are good to go.

If you want to pump it out, the PELA 6000 pump is a great siphon to have in the garage for a lot of fluid changes.

Out!

I would just siphon what you can and fill it with new gas, removing the tank is a big job.

add a little stabil and new gas. i worked for a company that stored boats and watercraft. and a lot of people would store them without treating the gas. when they would pick them up i would give them a card and tell them to call me if they had problems with starting and idle. a little stabil and fresh gas always solved the problem. alcohol gas will not last. i try to not keep it a month.
