08 HYM 1100 S vs 10 HYM 796
So what would you all go with, a brand new '10 Hypermotard 796, which I love the white look. Or do you go for a slightly used 08 Hypermotard 1100 S, all said and done the S will be a little bit more. It only has 1500 kms on it. Would I be nuts to get the 796?
I come from a 08 DRZ 400 SM, I weigh about 230 lbs, 6'1. With only 9 hp in the difference, is there a huge performance difference, or will it all come from the 21 lb. ft torque difference. Either way I'm going to see a huge improvement from my DRZ.
I want either of these bikes to have fun around the city, and backroads, but to also do some weekend trips (1000kms) a few times over the summer.
What would you all do if you were me?

Torque is where you will notice it.

1100
The Hyper is not some crazy superbike producing 200hp at 17k rpm.
The increase in displacement provides more torque and you will be happy to have it.
IMO, go for the 1100 and you will never have to wonder, "what if."

I had a 4 mile test ride on a 08 1100 and now have 195 miles on my 796 ... I am 5'8 and 190...Sheer monster Torque in the meat of the powerband is indeed the difference ..... I have been fairly easy on mine so far but have been up and down the rpm curve between 3K and 7K and rolled on the throttle hard while shifty in to 2nd/3rd and the front tire does not want to leave the ground ....yet ...But I am not ready for it to either. The 796 seems weightless, brakes are powerful ..... the 1100 or 796 decision comes down to how hard do you want it to hit ? Not saying "need" it to hit as we all know "need" has nothing to do with it ..... The 796 gets right with the program in a very controlable quick and nimble manner ... it pulls in 3rd gear from 35 to 75mph very very quickly ..... anyone interested [U]must[U] test ride both.

I disagree... in my case "need" is a better descriptor... it's a desire that starts in my brain and gets incessantly stronger until I get my fix. Yes, it's "NEED" and yes, get the 1100 or we will all laugh at you. (remotely and virtually because you are bigger than I am evidently)

will you ever ride two up or with a lot of cargo? 21 ftlb is a lot. at your weight and size i would go for the 1100. look for a leftover 09 i got my 09s for 10k plus tax. i also feel the components on the 10s look cheaper.

Theres no 09 left overs at the one ducati dealer in atlantic canada, they just have a used 08 non-s, which is red, which I don't like. I'll be going to pick the 08 up on Saturday as of now. I've always been a "the bigger the better" kind of guy, so I think I'll be happier with the 1100, and the fact it has a ohlins rear shock, and adjustable forks for the track days will be nice, also has a DP seat, and rear stand I believe.

...now you're talkin'. now before you even start it up go get some DP cams, a full termi, big bore kit and maybe a small supercharger. Might as well save yourself some work a month down the road when you start NEEDING more power again.
