First I am a newb so I bow down and pay respect..... I have little road experience .... test rode a 1100, rode a 900SS for a day, put 125 miles on a 800 Monster and then purchased a 796 and have about 85 MI miles on it ......a 796 Is Not a 1100 ...I just do not understand the apple to apple comparison. A 796 is never going to have the shear overkill of a 1100. WADR to the poster ....You own a pumped up 1100 ... the 796 is just not on the same goose the throttle lift the front tire arena. I fully knew that going in to my purchase though I am sure the 1100 to 796 comparison is going to go on all year long.

i checked out the 796 at the local dealer the other day. i could see how it would be disappointing to those of us with the 1100s...
but i guess it is meeting the needs of a different demographic pretty nicely....a good first "big bike" for those stepping up from smaller, less powerful machines.

Sorry, I probably didn't give enough info. First up, not a bad bike, handling is sweet. THe forks (not fuly adjustable) seem as good as the standard s forks. The engine would be better I guess with the race can and ecu (semed to have a flat spot). But you can have loads of fun with this engine withut worrying about sliding etc.. Standard of finish is what you would expect on a lower price build than the 1100.
The one thing I couldn't get was the clutch. Perhaps it was a bad example but it was almost like an automatic clutch with no articular bite point...So I'm not dissing your purchase choice. I think it's a good sensible choice for anyone, it's light, handles and has some good midrange.

Whilst I'm on the subject, I remember reading a test of the 750ss by Alan Cathcart...a racer of some repute, who said that the bike was sweet and that all you needed on the road was 60 -70bhp anyway...lots more fun. Especially in a V twin package.

Nice follow up Karlr ... No problem... thanks for filling in the gap. I will be looking to do a pipe set/slipon in the future.

the handling should be great on the 796 not to mention you can get on the gas harder coming out of turns (great rain bike) but to be realistic, it's the same bike less the motor.

I guess the 796 is for another demographic, I myself would have bought it instead of the 1100 if it was available then because of 2 factors, I am new to this kind of biking, I was scared of an 1100 engine and second is the price being my first Bike.. of this kind... didn't know I would fall in love... doiiiinnnnng!

I dig it
I dig the look of the 796. Seems to be very good bike to $$$ ratio. hopefully a ton of people buy them, then sell them because they moved on the something with fill in the blank) more wind protection, more power...whatever the new thing is. that way, my cheap self can pick up a used one...CHEAP
