How to value a salvaged Hyper
Hello all....
I picked up a 2008 Hyper, from a friend, that was totaled from a deer strike. I was going to fix it for my girlfriend to ride but it's too tall for her and we've decided to look for something different.
There was a lot of plastic damage and a small dent in one of the fame tubes from the bars going full lock and bending the stop. I know it's difficult without pictures but how does one determine a value for this sort of thing.
I've found/replaced the seat, footpeg bracket and the handlebars, I still need to replace the clutch lever, the left side plastic (fork and tank) and the front fairing.
There will still be some rash on the left side bottom of the forks and some small scuffs on some of the smaller parts.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

looking at what used hypers are going for now... I would think that a salvaged hyper even if rebuilt would still be worth more in parts than as a whole bike.
Are you looking to sell?

Have you had the bike checked out by a professional to make sure it's straight and has no bends in the forks, headstock or frame? That's a huge issue, as is how close you put it back to stock before selling it. If you sold it as is without any checks or repairs, it's probably not worth much.

Yes, I'm looking to sell. Or trade for something smaller.

I had a Ducati shop do an estimate of repairs.... they wrote the frame because of the damage I mentioned earlier. I don't know if there was any work done to determine if it's still straight, but I'm guessing it's just cosmetic damage.
Ok, how do I determine what "not much" is?

I'm looking for the stock brake light. Can you sell that to me?

Well.... I dont really know how to value a bike like this so.... keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am basing it off what I think the parts of this bike are worth, and what other hypers are going for used right now.
Considering that you can buy a standard model for $7K-$8k used (maybe even cheaper) and that the good parts on the bike are Wheels ($1000) subframe($300) Swingarm($400) brakes ($500w/masters) engine ($2000w/electronics dash and ignition) forks ($500 w/ tripples) Then you have a bunch of misc stuff that you can still make some money off of......
I would say a crash salvaged hyper is worth about $4500-$5000 if all the items listed above are in good shape and done have obvious signs of having been on a totaled bike. Again this is just my opinion based off what I know used hypers are going for, and what the going price of parts seems to be. Also I am assumiong the value of standard parts are in the same ball park as "S" parts. If your bike is an S my figures on the wheels and forks might be a little low, and you can sell the rear shock for about $500.
hope this helps....

Couple tweaks I'd add:
I bought my 2008 hyper 1100 for $8300 brand new (15 miles)
I will be selling my wheels - and if I can get $800 + shipping I will consider myself successful, having watched the market pretty closely for the past few months.
There has been an ohlins rear shock on ebay forever for $599, so that $500 ballpark on the shock might be a bit high
I don't mean to depress you
Also, I bought a 99 m750 in 2003 that had a tweaked frame which was undisclosed by the seller and not recorded on the title. When I figured it out and tried to return it for a refund, seller told me to sue him or pound sand (this guy was a lawyer). Getting the frame straightened by GMD Computrack and then powder coated was over $1000, plus labor on either side to tear it down and reassemble. All told, easily again another $1000. If I had known...
edit:
Also, a fork tube was bent. What a shitty thing to do, eh? Karma will get him.

I'd say that is hugely optimistic. No way would you get anything near that for most of that stuff. I've bought better Duc forks, brakes and shocks for much less than the numbers you quote. The stock forks are basicallly worthless, particularly if they have rash, rear shock is worthless, the brakes aren't worth any where near $500, the wheels - not $1k,... If you got $3,500 out of a wrecked Hyper you'd be lucky. Given the sale prices of clean, Hypers, even if you fixed it up, the bike's probably not worth $5k.
And if it was a head on deer strike that was hard enough to tweak the frame, I would have a competent shop check the steering head and the forks for bends. Be surprised if the bike was still dead straight unless it was a glancing blow, but only a professional assessment will tell you whether it's straight or not.
Also, OP, by 'not much', I mean almost nothing if the buyer is taking the risk that the frame is tweaked. I think you'd be wise to find out whether the bike is straight before you try to sell it.

Guys... thanks for all the input. This is exactly what I've been looking for.
While it's nice to know the value of the parts I'm not really interested in parting it out. I have way to many other hobbies.
What I was trying to figure was the value of the bike as it sits and then just buy a VFR or somthing smaller than the Hyper.
FWIW, the deer strike was not so much hitting the deer but the deer taking the front wheel out from under him and him going down on the left side of the bike.
Here's a shot of the damage to the frame. You can see both the dent in the tube and the damage to the stop.

I had similar damage to my frame from the fork leg coming round, bending the steering stop, and hitting the frame.
Ultimately I found the triple, fork stanchion, fork slider, and front axle all bent - although they really didn't seem like it just by eyeballing it.
Just a bit of a warning on unseen damage, I suppose.
