Newbe Q
Why is the duck motor so noisy ??
I don't mind it. Assume all is ok.
Wet clutch. so must all be valves/cams ??
I know air cooled runs loose tolerances compared to Liquid cooled

Allow me to make an analogy
The Ducati motor is to motorcycles, as
is to
That is all.

It's a desmo, the cams open and close the valves as opposed to valves that close by spring. You need a dry clutch conversion, people will really think your bike's f'd up.

The rattle, which is usually the loudest sound on a duc, is from the clutch plates impacting against clutch basket. Eventually the plates drive grooves into the basket and the rattle gets louder. And then your Duc becomes Duc Norris.
If you want a quieter duc, stick with the stock exhaust, and get some precision machined clutch components.
Damn you guys and your serious replies.

Thanks for the welcome
1st let me be perfectly clear. The noise(duc music) doesn't bother me.
My mechanical curiosity only.
Have 300mi so far. Really like the bike. I traded my DRZ 400 for the Duc so 2x displacement and more than 2x HP is more my speed. Before the DRZ ive owned many other bikes with over 100hp but all over 500lb. I like the lightness but plenty of power.
ALSO you cant deny the WOW factor. People are constantly coming up and checkin it out. Lots of positive comments.
Only thing I dont like is tall 1st gear. Have to slip cluch till 15 mph. Have order a 14t CS sprocket

ciao and welcome to being a ducatisti.
now that we know you have a 796 hyper ... let me advise that the noise you are hearing is NOT the clutch. your 796 has an wet clutch, and as such will NOT be making the noise that a dry open clutch does (unless of course, something goes horribly wrong with your wet clutch, then it might make a LOT of noise )
with a stock desmodue air/oil cooled motor, you will hear a lot more noise from the motor than a water cooled, traditional rocker arm style motor, as there are no water jackets to quite down the motor. plus, even with the stock muffler/catalytic unit in place, the exhaust is tuned from the factory to produce a very nice sound ... as the sound the motor makes is a big part of owning a ducati.
ciao a presto,
johnc
