Thinking about parting out my 2009 Hyper
Sounds crazy, I know. Ducati's part prices are ridiculous and I am second guessing my decision to get back on a bike. The combination of these two facts, and in an effort to help my fellow Hyper owner with cost of replacement parts for their Hyper has me thinking that it may make sense to part out my 4 month old bike. The bike is an 1100S with 4,600 miles on it. It has fallen over once where I failed to get the kickstand down all the way while helping a downed rider. Today I missed a turn, went a few feet up a dirt bank before it fell over. The left handguard, mirror and bottom screw hole securing the fairing broke. Estimated cost of repairs, $1000. The bike is in otherwise pristine condition.
I am serious about doing this and would like to hear feedback, whether a parts request or general feedback.
I plan to contact Ducati next week to see if they will honor a parts warranty as the bike carries a two year warranty and the parts are only 4 months old.

dude i had my bike for three days and did $2000 worth of damage to it due to me not paying attention and my buddy making a sketchy move in front of me, i felt like hell but luckily it was mostly cosmetic and i was back on the bike the next day... i still have a cracked nose piece but the bike looks good and i love it, think hard about it but I'd keep it

dan ... keep the hypertard ... get yourself the zeta bar/guards/turn signal bundle that cassos (christian) worked the deal on:
http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthre...highlight=zeta
then finish off the new handelbars with a set of crg lane splitter mirrors.
you will be WAY ahead on pricing, have superior parts on the bike over the stock pieces, and if you drop the bike again and need to replace a few of the bits, they are WAY less expensive than the stock parts.
plus, as your hypertard is black, get the carbon fiber handguards, and the bike will look tits!!!

Get rid of that thing before you hurt someone with it.

I am bi-polar on this post. If you really feel out of control on a motorcycle, maybe you should retire as it would be stressful and unenjoyable. But if you are hanging up you guns because the cost of replacement parts that seems a bit goofy to me. The stock hand guards and mirrors suck. Maybe the bike feels unsettled when you ride it because it is set up wrong. It is amazing what a difference proper ride height, suspension settings and tire pressure can do to the feel of the bike and they are all free.
You have piqued my curiosity about why you really want to part out your bike. It sounds like it might be a cash cow, but there is no guarantee you will make the value of the bike back if you part it out.
It looks like John C might have insomnia by the time stamp of his post.

I'm confused. You want Ducati to warranty parts you damaged in a crash? Good luck with that.
Regarding parting it out, you will never get more parting out OEM parts than you will just selling it outright, and it will take you a very long time to sell all the OEM parts.
I would recommend just selling it as is.

Guys,
I raced motocross for many years and have had many injuries as a result. My last injury nearly cost me my life. I decided to give up riding 10 years ago. I never rode street.
Earlier this year, a friend brought over his Hyper and let me ride it. It felt great and ended up buying one. I have had fun on it, had Lindeman set up the suspension and have taken a methodical approach to learning how to ride street. I was planning on a two day course with Pridmore down at the Streets or Willow.
I live near Old Calaveras Road and spend a lot of time practicing through those twisities.
Those that have ridden with me know that I am reasonable conservative but, when safe, will try pushing the envelope. That was the case yesterday. I made one pass up the road to look for debris and moisture. The road was in good shape. Coming back, I came into a decreasing radius turn, fixated on a rider coming the other way and missed my entry. I'm pretty sure I would have low sided if I pressed the turn so I sat the bike up hit the brakes and slid onto the shoulder up an embankment where I fell to the left with the bike falling on me. Dumb shit move but that is now history. I can tell you that lifting a 400 pound bike uphill with one arm is a bitch.
I am not young at 56, and with shoulder throbbing, started to question whether getting back on a bike was a good decision. As part of that process, I thought I might be able to serve the Ducati Hyper owners by parting my bike to save you guys some money. If I took a loss, no big deal. The parts on the bike are warranteed for two years. Logic would suggest that those parts might still be under warranty on a different bike.
That's it.
