How much oil?

I did search, and most of the threads were locked, LOL.

Anyway, how much oil do I need to buy/put in for an oil change with filter??

The stupid manual tells you nothing.........in seven different languages. Everything I find on this site talks about type, viscosity, etc., before it gets locked that is.

Thanks,
Dave

I understand your comments about threads being lockedIt only seems Stryder seems too get his undies in a knot when oil is mentioned.
This is what forums are for!!!!!
Back to oil, I always buy a 4 litre container for all my changes, You probably only need 3.5 litres or there abouts.
I fill mine up to the top line on the sight glass then start the engine for a few minutes then turn off then fill back up to the top line on the sight glass.
Restart the engine then turn off and check again.
This is all done with the bike being level on my rear stand.

Infact im about to change my oil today

Thanks doon.

I know everyone, myself included has been hard on this oil thing in the last few days, therein lies the irony of this question. I guess I just didn't want everyone, especially Stryder, to think I was just asking to be a wise-azz........this time.

My manual ('03 620 Sport) calls for 3.3 liters. The manual for the '09 1100 HM lists 3.7 liters.

It's not relevant until you tell us what kind of filter you are using.

The brand of filter you use is more important that the oil. In fact if you don't use a Ducati brand filter your bike will die a slow death, even if you use 20W-50W like Alex recommends. Why else would Ducati make a filter?

I am pretty sure I can get this thread locked too.

Next I am going to target chain lube.

Out!

dave -

also suggest that aside from oiling the gasket on the new oil filter, that you fill the new oil filter about 3/4 full before installing. this helps to ensure that your ducs engine gets a nice shot of oil when starting it up after the oil change.

Axe, you have been on a roll lately-- I literally LOL'd on that one.

My two cents on this (unmentionable) subject-- don't buy the Ducati filter once
the warranty is expired. The K&N one is better, cheaper, and has the nifty
welded on hex "nut" for easy removal with a socket wrench. The engine
case on the 1100 DS engines wraps the oil filter and interferes with a lot of
oil filter wrenches, making it a little awkward to access the Ducati filter.
The K&N filter solves this little problem nicely.

Be careful. Too much LOL'ing leads to thread locking.

Ironic that not only is an "ST Rider" moderating the Hypermotard forum - - but right now, he's off on another thread arguing ad nauseum about 999's again. As if THAT topic hasn't been beaten to death. Why doesn't he lock that thread?

Yeah, well those 999s are pretty controversial and unlike oil where someone may post some info that can possible help the OP's quandary, the 999 won't get any prettier.....

Thanks JohnC for the info, I hadn't thought of that. Dave, I did in fact buy a K&N filter for the Hyper.

I guess I'm going to go with Dino oil this time as the bike only has 700 miles and it might be too soon for synthetic. I know there has been some discussion on that subject before and I guess I'll give that a search before we get this thread locked too.

I wonder what kind of oil a 999 uses??

Dave
