Got a 796 ! Want a cooler sound on a budget
Hello all ... I am real new here and new to the Ducati family. On Dec 18th I picked up a 796HM .. I am constantly grinning from ear to ear. I have ridden/raced enduro bikes for about 40 of my 50yr old life. This Mich winter is going to be very very tuff for me as you can all understand. I have not had a motorcycle the last ten years. This summer I test rode a 1100HM and a 125mi ride on a friends Monster. Both had aftermarket exhausts and I loved the sound.
I have squirted around on it two times last Saturday. I can tell that the 796 will have great power for my inexperienced hands for some time ahead but I want a better sound without a Huge cash outlay ... I can not afford costly mods nor do I want to do anything that will require system computer adjustments by the dealer right away. I feel the cat has a decent streamlined shape on the 796 si I may just gut that as a cheap alternative.
I have searched and read this forum for after market slip ons and gutting out the stock muffler. I have two questions:
It looks like the baffle tube is welded to the inside pipe at the end. If I use a hole saw on muffler tip to cut around that baffle opening would you think I could use a long chisel to break the weld ? I do not want to create a rattletrap
.
If/when I drop a Zard or LeoVince slip on the bike I would not need to do any engine tweaking ?
It looks like I should also look at opening up the air box down the road. My very 1st thing to do will be to removed that black recirculation box on the motor.
I appreciate learning from all of you in this forum this upcoming year. Happy New Year !
Harold H.

congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum, I think you are the first on this forum with a 796, well as far as I know.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new bike.
Where are you located? I have a few modified cans you could try out if you happen to be near by.
I don't think a chisel would work, but you could try a carbite bit and hack at it from the rear opening like I did. For a good sound all you really need is to cut about half of the last outlet pipe down to "open" the exhaust sound. removing it completely is not necessary and a lot more work. Hope this makes sense.
I think if you're going to do the mod and get the Zards then you should be shopping for a new ECU as well. Might be able to get by with the Fat Duc(sp?) instead
You can check out this thread I did and email me with any questions.
i'll try to help

Congratulations on the bike. The problem with the the 2010 bikes is that they run the Seimens electronics, which uses two O2 sensors. One before the cat, and one after. So I don't know if I would gut it.These bike have emissions are tightly monitored by the two O2 sensors and new ECU, more so than the previous models.I would be very careful about mods to the air box and exhaust.Do they make an aftermarket exhaust for these bikes yet? What's available from Ducati Performance? I realize you don't want to dump a ton of cash right now but I would be curious to see what they do for the performance exhaust.

I'm not sure about the new Hypers with the Seimens fuel injection, but on the "older" Hypers you could gut the kat or replace it with a kat remover as long as you kept the 02 sensor intact, and you could also gut the mufflers or install slip-ons, (with the db killers installed) but YOU MUST leave the air-box alone, or the bike would be too lean. Aloha Alex

I'm not absolutely positive, but I assume the new ECU will compare the O2 sensor reading taken before the cat to the reading taken after the cat. No cat= no difference = fault recognized by ECU .

I do believe that the O2 sensors are on each header pipe before the cat they monitor straight out of the head practally on the vertical cylinder an the horizontal O2 sensor is in the middle of the pipe before the cat

I wasn't sure about that.If that's the case, maybe not such a problem.
