First impressions Hyper 796
Hi there,
New to the site so this will be my first contribution to it
Was asked to clock 500km on the new baby hyper.........
Comparing it to my own 1100 (with cam-job en 2-1-2 termi incl. cat-eliminator) it's pretty gutless .
You have to rev it very hard to get it going, it also has no end shot so you miss out on al the fun that the 1100 gives you.
Non adjustable front does it job, but thats also caused by the fact that somehow you cant ride it that hard compared to the 1100.
Brakes work oke, new handlebars are a bit wider but not noticable while youre driving
Some how I'm missing the point that Ducati want's to make with the baby-hyper , I would never pick a new 796 over a second hand 1100 if that's what the budget would only allow. You get the looks, I'll give them that( the black switch gear looks very nice , matt black/pearl white combo is stunning!) but you don't get a hyper, but that's just my two cents......
Grtz ex-tuononono

Any idea if the frame and body work is the same?
Factory Matt black on an 1100 would be sweet

On first sight it looks exactly the same, didn't have the time(and the guts) to try and switch parts.
Saw today a completly matt black 796 at the dealer with termi 2-1-2 and red wheel striping........awsome I get what you're thinking....I'm tempted myself.
I was told the 796 should be lower as a 1100, measured it ....exactly the same height so i think the frame is also the same but I 'll ask when I return the bike

I think it's intended more for city driving where the hyper's torque might be a bit much in slippery/wet conditions. Also keep in mind that in europe there are heavy taxes to be paid for high CC bikes, so this might be a way to make the hyper more approachable at a lower pricepoint. Some countries in europe also have graduated licenses, so it might take awhile to buy an 1100cc bike, whereas the 796 might not require same license. Having said that, here in the US I don't think it makes any sense.

Well - It's gratifying to see that neither of the new Hyper offerings are going to obselete my '08 completely.

Upon returning the bike I asked if the frame and bodywork were the same,
Bodywork is the same as a 1100, de framedimensions are also the same, on the 1100 some mounting brackets are welded on as on the 796 the are now casted, which makes the frame lighter.
Differance in ride height as promoted is thanks to the new seat of the 796(which is NOT comfortable! )
I hope this answers Merovingian's question....
The are aparently marketing the 796 for city cruising and easy entry for the masses not familiar with Ducati, not for hard core ducatisti
