Dual Spark Vs. Single Spark??
Hey All,
I am a Sport Classic owner who is thinking about a Hyper. I can get a new 2008 for a great deal non "s" which is a dual spark like my SC bike.
Whats the difference between the Dual vs Single besides the obvious??
Anyone would consider a 2010 over a 2008 both new but for a savings of $3000 on the later??
Thanks, Gio

All 08-09 Hypers are the dual spark DS motors, I hear the 2010 Hyper motors will be a single plug motor.
I was always under the impression that on large bores engines like the Hyper the dual plug was the hot ticket, because of the better flame travel, I guess time will tell.... but for three grand savings, I would get the 08-09 since we know what to do with these motors, and wait a year to get the bugs out of the new engine. Aloha Alex

Dual spark cylinder heads have been around since 1917. A number of patents
on dual spark have been issued (and expired) along the way. Everyone from
Nissan to Ford to Volvo has used it in their vehicles with some differing claims
to what it improves. The basic idea seems to be a more complete burn with
better flame travel, especially over a large, domed piston. This would seem
to improve fuel mileage, power, and emissions, as well as reduce detonation.
The idea is so popular that there have been companies doing twin-plug
conversions for Harleys and older Ducatis.
So Ducati is now claiming improved HP in the new 1100 engines with a single
plug head and a revised combustion chamber shape. But they cheated a bit
and raised the compression ratio, which probably accounts for most of the
5 HP increase. Fuel economy _might_ have gone down, but the bottom line
is that the 2010 model will have more power (or at least that is the claim),
and that will help differentiate the 1100 from the 796 model.
Keep in mind also that the 2010 model will have to use a different ECU, so
DP ECU's for the existing Hypers will not work (if you had ideas about picking
up a DP ECU and using a non-Termi aftermarket exhaust with it). The fuel
management is made by an entirely different company (Siemens Vs. Magneti
Marelli). There are also rumors that the new DP ECU will NOT disable the
closed-loop EFI function and instead retains the new twin oxygen sensor
setup now standard for 2010. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it would add
complexity and make the present non-Termi exhaust systems incompatible
(without adding an extra fitting for the second O2 sensor).

I just read part of a little report where they found that a single, centrally located spark plug in the head was best, such as at the top of a hemispherical combustion chamber, but given that this location is not available, then the twin plug setup on the sides is best. The single plug on the side is third.

Just don't forget to plug in BOTH your coils if you unplug them. After replacing the cams, I forgot to plug in 1 of the coils (single spark) and it ran like crap. I couldn't even get it above 5 grand while driving it, and I knew something was up. At least it was an easy fix. It turns the check engine light on too!

Harley Sportster engines have a dual spark Screamin Eagle head available. The only other modern DS setup that I know of. I have heard it makes a slight improvement on fuel efficiency but no noticable power improvement.
I miss my Nightster but the Hyper is much more fun!

My Guzzis got 20% better fuel economy by dual-plugging the heads, with no other changes done at the same time.
