rather than getting a buell or an sv, get a late 90's/early 2k monster;
seat's comfy and you can get saddlebags, a windshield and risers for touring, same basic engine design as the 'tard, cooler than a buell and the sv.
i did the opposite -- bought a 'tard to go with my monster and it's been since!

Thanks for the input. As it happens sometimes...a bike turned up...just 2 hours away that might fit the bill, although it is not a predictable choice.
I am all set to purchase and pick up a 1992 907ie Paso as the Hyper companion.
This will allow me to sample the sport touring genre without going "all in" (price is a reasonable $3K). It is somewhat classic already (OK, it is vintage 80s, not classic), and it will be different enough to ride (higher revving, water cooled, older gen twin)
I pick her up tomorrow. I will have to miss the demo rides at the SM mcycle show, but hey....Merry Christmas to me ! (Pic is stock)

i have always had a soft spot for pasos ... there is just something cool about their square tube frames and aero bodywork.

That's great! I actually have had my 907ie for 15 years and bought the Hyper as a companion

Oh, man. I jumped the gun. The deal fell through... as I went to pick her up.
I endured 1 hour with the boffins at the uhaul. I drove 2.5 hrs to grass valley, with the 4X8 trailer behind my Ford Excretion. Took one look at the Paso, and knew I needed to back out. Review of records indicated $4000 worth of crash damage in 1998. The bike was also pretty crusty, and looked very much like it was put away wet. It did have high compression pistons installed Nichols, but the fact I encountered a number of electrical issues did not make up for it. Fortunately I got my deposit back.
I was pretty bummed, because the Paso fit me nicely and made nice noises.
As I was driving back...with an empty trailer...a guy from Sacramento called me back after I sent him an email a week ago. He said I ended up in his spam folder. After a short conversation we decided I should see the bike. It was on my way back from Grass Valley. Well...it was perfect, with 12K miles, and just had new tires and the big 12K service done at the dealer.
A 2000 BMW K1200RS should also serve as a good companion. Water cooled, 4 cyl, ABS, bags....opposite of hyper (very civilized).
This time....the pic is from my garage. Thanks to all for the input.

My money is for a Triumph Street triple. Year old low mile models are showing up on Craigslist for under 6k
