Clutch thickness

I was tinkering with the new HM last night and decided to look at the clutch since I know the bike was driven pretty hard and it seems a bit grabby to me. Per the service manual it is supposed to have 6 driven plates and one spring plate that should be 1.5mm thick each.It should also have 4 drive friction plates should be a minimum of 2.6mm each. Then it goes on to state: "Caution:Overall thickness of the set of clutch plates should not be less than 46.1 mm" I'm not sure how they do their math in Italy but that just doesn't work.

To further confuse me, I have 10 driven plates that measure around 1.5mm, No spring plate that I can tell and 8 drive plates that measure right 2.9mm. The driven plates are steel and the friction plates are aluminum. The whole pack measures a total of around 39mm. I am assuming the previous owner changed the clutch.

Are the original friction plates steel? How thick should the aluminum one be? They look pretty worn out to me but without something to compare them to, I have no idea.

The spring plate looks like a driven plate with a slight bend to it, its very subtle and you will not notice it if you did not know. I know what you mean, compared to wet clutch friction plates, the dry clutch plates look like toast when new, as the friction material pads are harder and thinner. OEM frictions are aluminum, drivens steel. At 9K miles my frictions measured 2.9 to 2.95mm, so you are fine. Clean the frictions up with brake cleaner and the drivens with a scotchbrite pad. It should feel brand new when reassembled.

where did you hear 46.1?

I thought i read the other week on another thread that it was anywhere between 37.5 and 39mm in spec.

If you have the service manual CD, the dimensions for the clutch plates, the clutch pack and the spring length are wrong! I don't know the correct specs.

I got that directly from the service manual CD and I agree that it cannot possibly be correct. Most things I have found state a clutch pack thickness of around 39mm.
