Leaking tank... opinions wanted on my options.
After the long coma my Hyper was in I finally got it back together- with the Beast R intake installed.
As I'm putting the fuel pump cover back on, I notice one of the bolts is threading in at an angle, but it's threading in true, not cross-threaded, so I'm not really concerned. There is a brass insert in the cover, which i presume would sit flush against the metal base of the fuel pump assembly, which I also presume fits flush against the tank. I feel a little resistance, go a bit further (1/4 turn?) and then I have fuel running out over my hand. @$#^!!
Points to note. - In the past the dealer had swapped the fuel pump pursuing a different issue. I don't know if it was mounted incorrectly or not. It never leaked or had any problems before
- The 2009 fuel pump cover has a different design (the cover mounts to a fixed stud instead of putting a bolt through the cover into the tank) and the 2008 tank part number is superseded by the 2009 part number (acc to the dealer)
So do I: - Jump up and down and try to get the dealer to give me a new tank, based on the fact that they changed the design and therefore knew it was dodgy?
- Sell the Beast R kit and get the CA Cycleworks tank? (I've followed the tank threads and personally I'm of the opinion that the tank sacrifices too much intake space for capacity)
- Try to have the tank fixed?
I'm especially interested in the 1st and 3rd options and any experience people have had with something similar.
Thanks~

i had a leak on my tank last year do to the faulty zard exhaust system i installed the pipe running along the tank leading to the cans was bent wrong leading to burning a hole in the tank.so what i did is called acerbis who makes the tank for ducati and they sent me some material that the tank is made of and i plastic welded the hole and then put some epoxy over the weld followed by some adhesive heat barrior...its hasnt leaked yet in your case i would take it back to the dealer and demand a new tank.

#1 really isn't an option. It didn't leak, you damaged it, and now it leaks.
#2 isn't an option simply because you are of the opinion that you need some gigantic intakes over extra fuel
#3 sounds like this is your choice
You might want to ask anyone hear that installled the CCW tank if they want to part with their stocker for a price. Might me cheaper then having the other one fixed correctly.

the first step to getting something warrantied is dont say anything about touching that tank, dont even admit to unscrewing the seat! the techs should be cool and replace it cause its not coming out of their pocket or the dealers pocket, i dont see why youd have a problem

+ eleventy billion with dave's comment.
it's shite like this that propagates the "us vs. them" attitude between dealerships and customers ... and this kind of blatant dishonesty only supports dealership's point of view.
the better approach ... have an honest dialog with your dealership's service manager. let them know what happened, and be truthful. i have on more than one instance had a warranty claim made by the dealership, that was questionable ... with the dealership supporting me. i would like to think that this was due to my maintaining a good relationship with them as a good customer should.
again, your mileage may vary, and only a suggestion based on my own experience.

Hopefully Dave will send a copy of this thread to all the so cal dealerships.
What a shitty thing to suggest.

If you get no help from your dealer, and if your not sure about repairing it, I think you can find a used stock tank real cheap from some of our forum members that have installed the CA Cycleworks large tank, thats what I would do... Aloha Alex

Thanks guys-
The dealer knows I work on the bike and how it happened. The only reason I would consider asking for a replacement is that the original design was such that there was a significant chance of this happening. Other guys here have said they've had the airbox replaced under warranty when a bolt sheared off, so if others chimed in about the tank, I figured there might be a chance.
It didn't really occur to me to look for one of the guys who bought the CA Cycleworks tank... which is why I posted- to get some ideas. (although shipping it to Singapore may not make it economical)
