Start flaming me now - stupid question

I tried to look in the manual (owner, not service manual) and tried searching through these threads but didn't find instructions for putting in a new air filter on the Hyper. I took some of it apart last night and it looks like the air box is under the gas tank (after taking off a lot of body work). Is that right? Do I have to remove the gas tank just to change the air filter?

Noob at this Ducati stuff and only have about 900 miles on the Hyper, so I suppose I'm due some newbie flaming, but I guess it's worth it for good info.

Thanks!

You are correct but, the gas tank also has the wiring harness attached so its very difficult to move. I had the wife hold it up while I changed mine out. theres like 4 screws that are a bit tricky. So, I'd call a friend.

Thanks

I was afraid of that... I suppose I could insert something here about the poor design of that little issue, but since the manual doesn't even show the filter needing any attention until 7500 miles I guess they just didn't think it needed to be easy.

Appreciate the info...

Try changing the air filter on a BMW K1200LT. Stupid design. It's under the gas tank also. You would need to remove tip over bars and their cover, the wind wings, mirrors upper body panels, oddments box and surrounding stingray, driver's seat, wires, gas tank.

For a noobie a daunting task that could take 2 hours. For a seasoned person about an hour. BMW service for a 12K is like $900. Parts are around $160. Rest is labor at book rate.

You can do it without removing the tank. I removed all the bolts (don't forget the large one in the rear), lifted the front, and proped the tank up on a piece of wood jamed between it and the frame. There is just enough room to get the cover off and filter out. I did this to swap out a new K&N filter when everything was new and clean. If your servicing a dirty filter I'd remove the tank as you can't see as well and be sure dirt did not fall into the airbox.

Will do...

Thanks guys. This bike is still pretty clean. Just putting the K&N in there. Sounds like a pain in the butt, but at least it doesn't have to be done very often.

If you have a small vacuum hose attachment suck out the center of the air filter before you remove it to get any loose debris especially small pebbles as they can fall into your air box and get sucked in the engine. The Hyper filters from the middle not the outside of the filter like most airboxes.
