FWIW... snatchy throttle/chain adjustment

When I first got my bike I posted that the throttle felt very snatchy, and I took this to be somewhat normal based on other posts, about the Hyper specifically and about other Ducs in general.

The other day I adjusted the chain to factory spec:

- push down on chain under swingarm, release it, measure distance from bottom of swingarm (not from the chain guard) to the center pin. Should be about 33mm or so, or 1 1/4" plus a bit.

After doing so, the bike is completely transformed. So much easier to ride at small throttle openings and there's no more jerkiness transitioning from off/on throttle.

So in my case anyway, the throttle snatchiness was really just driveline slack in the form of the chain being too loose. YMMV, but to me, the bike feels as easy to ride at this point as just about anything else I've ridden (SV650, Bandit 1200 recently).

The sticker is incorrect, the service manual is correct. See this thread:

Correct chain adjust Please Read !

Your now likely too tight and should go back and readjust for 38 - 42mm. The snatchy throttle is from the mixture, a tight chain may just mask it a bit but cause problems.

Actually, if people actually read the direction on the swingarm a little more closely, they'd notice that the measurement you get when setting by that method differs very little from the service manual method.

If you set by the method on the swingarm:

- pull down on chain and RELEASE. Measure from the ALUMINUM part of the swingarm itself to the chain center and set slack to ~30mm.

If you measure by the service manual method:

- pull down on chain, DON'T release, and measure from the PLASTIC chain guard to the chain center and set slack to 40mm (1.5").

They basically work out to pretty close to the same amount of slack if you go back and use any set point to measure to the chain center.

heffergm-

Hey, glad you solved your snatchy throttle problem! I was out today for an hour or so, and was thinking how smooth the throttle is. I was actually feeling bad for you!

It's sounding more and more like your bike was not properly set up. I'm having perfect throttle response, no pops or rich running - just some nice soft burbling on a closed throttle.

The bike is a dream to ride. I'm a pretty tame rider, and have left chicken strips on all my other bikes but, after only 100 miles on the Hyper, my strips are almost gone! So easy to tip it in and no drama at angles I normally would have balked at. The BT-016's are superb!
