Error:exvl, concern??

Turned it on and got the msg EXVL.

I thought the message read "EVIL" and sort of thought it was cute .... but the engine light was on which didn't make it as cute

turned it off, waited a moment then on again, no more message... should I have it looked at??

meanwhile, it went through the next 3 or so hours of pure fun without a hitch, so I'd say it was nothing... but your opinions might help...

I must attach a camera to the bike somewhere, always go out for a quick spin, have so much fun and hardly ever take a snap.... this bike is still giving the same thrill as when I first got it... love it!!!

But, I was out at Macquarie Pass yesterday and a new Monster 1100 pulled up, wow, they do look very nice, I was starting to get attracted until the rider told me what he paid for it... lucky Hyper, I'll hang on to that baby for a while yet...

I was getting that error when I had both of the new keys on the ring, and it wouldn't let me turn it over. This was a problem that took me a week to trace back to the keys.
Maybe it was a different code. now i don't recall

I do believe that's an exhaust valve error i.e. "flapper valve".I got it once before I changed my exhaust. For me it happened during a long stretch of closed throttle deceleration such as coasting down a hill.Like you said, after cycling the ignition it was gone.I hooked up my VDST and found no codes. I wouldn't worry unless it keeps coming back. You are still running the stock exhaust righht?

Yeah, still standard exhaust...

I saw those codes (EXVL 23.1 Exhaust valve motor error
EXVL 23.2 Exhaust valve motor error
EXVL 23.3 Exhaust valve motor error
EXVL 23.4 Exhaust valve motor error
EXVL 23.5 Exhaust valve motor error
, in the service manual but I don't recall seeing a number showing up on screen...
it's done about 300kms and a couple of re-starts since without recurring... maybe it's a sign from the gods indicating a need to change to Termi's??? oh dear.. more money LOL

Thanks for your thoughts meanwhile!!!

Until you get a Termi, go to the dealer for a warranty repair.

You have to weed through the service menus to see the actual code after
one is thrown. The self-test that exercises the EXV servo at key-on is a
bit of a kluge, so I wouldn't worry about a single error if it only happens
very rarely. Basically, the ECU is checking the full range of the flapper
valve by sending the rotary servo off in one direction until it stops, recording
the servo position, then reversing to the other extreme limit and reading
that servo position. Stickiness in the flapper assembly or a disconnected
cable will cause it to fail the self-test. There is also a short version of this
self test that occurs on most power-ups, but I won't go into the details
here. The long version is run every so many power ups, and can usually
be forced by disconnecting the battery (but not always). Clear as mud?

To make matters more interesting, once the error has been detected, the
ECU tends to keep re-running the long version of the EXV exercise until the
error clears, possibly an attempt to clear carbon build-up in the valve.
Ahh technology, ain't it great??
