Another Airbox Mod Question

I know this has been talked about in a few forums but everyone has a different answer. I have a bone stock Hyper and would like to drill out the airbox. Should I drill the top and bottom or just the top? Some people say it will run lean others don't. Just wanting some advice for whats best in my situation. Thanks in advance

My seat of the pants dyno says its about 8 to 10 HP, hopefully next week
I'll have the bike on the real dyno and will post the results to see.

The bike is still stock except for this mod, the bike pulls HARDER everywhere!
is SUPER snappy, kinda like Clark Kent when he turns to Superman, well, maybe not that strong (but close!) The bike is sooo much more FUN to ride
and the front wheel will climb in 3rd gear with little effort. The intake now has a
noticeable cool GROWL that lets you something is down there!! Its a good
sound and not annoying. (but it's there!)

As long as your exhaust is STOCK the bike's closed loop ECU will adjust
your fuel map so it won't run overly lean.

I basically did the same airbox mods that (Yota) did, see his post Dec 17,
"airboxmod coupla photos" great pictures Yota, thanks!
I also used the BMC air filter, same as a K&N as far as I can tell,
I used a 2 1/8 in. hole saw for the top air box lid, and I removed the airbox
so I could drill the hole from the bottom of the airbox, (Yota uses a 1 1/2 in. and drills from the top.) I used a 1 3/4 in.
for the bottom hole, its a perfect fit as long as you modifiy the hole saw
by grinding the outside of the cutting teeth to the same size as the OD of the
hole saw body.

Note: the airbox is held in at 3 points, the REAR two points are push ins,
and NOT screws like they look like, just the single front is a small bolt.

I think this is a MUST DO!! mod for any Hyper modified or not, as this will
make your bike run the way it was ment to, a real stealth street fighter!

So after the purchase of the $65 dollar airfilter, a coupla of holes, and a couple of hours you WILL have your "Best Bang for the Buck!"

Now you know, Alex

PS: Compared to the size of the throttle body, the intake hole size of the stock airbox lid is a JOKE! really choked down.......
An old post of mine, but still holds true, Enjoy Alex

I was about to do a search on this but since I saw this first I guess i'll just ask.

1. Will drilling out the stock airbox void your warranty?

2. My bike is also stock will eventually upgrading my exhaust cause me to run to lean?

your bike is already running lean ... all of the modern (fuel injected) ducs are set up to run lean, to pass euro emission and sound tests.

the real question is: will my hypertard run better with the cut airbox lid?

yes, it will.

And get an o2 manipulator to assist with the fueling if you are worried.

Yeah, just really want to know "for sure" if it will run "to" lean, or leaner than it already is.

Thank's for answering my questions. After reading Hyper08's results from drilling out his airbox I'm very interested in drilling out mine. I'll share my results when I get around to doing it.

I drilled out the top of my box and also put a remus full exhaust with stock ecu and I have had no problems with mine. I did not drill out the bottom because in my opinion I did not want to suck hot air off of the motor. the shape of the gas tank side panels will funnel air to the top of the air box with what I would think would be nice cool air and the 1 1/2 inch hole will let in enough air. That's my two cents

Interesting stuff.....Am currently running LV cans and cat eliminator, woth 02 sensor connected and stock ECU. Am I pushing my luck by doing air box box mods and expecting the closed loop system to adjust fueling ?
I imagine it will be to far "out the window" to get it right ?
Your thoughts?
