I have to admit... I have never purposely popped a wheelie. But with the hyper, it just had to be done.
After trying to power wheelie the hyper a few different times since I got it a couple months ago... I was desperately trying to figure out what you all were on about. I could only get the front wheel on the light side, but not off the ground. But, because I am stubborn, I figured I would try again and again.
Soooo, just an hour or so ago, I went out to where I usually go to try this and once I was there, on the first run, I scooted back a bit, I jammed the throttle and this friggen thing popped right up... no questions asked. "Jampop". It was probably one of the most exhilarating moments i have had on a motorcycle in a while. Mostly because I thought it was going to be the same old try and fail that has been happening for me on this bike. I don't know exactly how high I went but I am guessing 2-3 feet because it took me a second to respond due to the surprise. I can't imagine it looked very pretty but the landing was relatively soft.
Anyways, now exhilarated with adrenaline pumping through my veins I parked and sat for about a minute to calm down. I then went to try again a few times. I don't know what changed, maybe how I was sitting, or how I was hitting the throttle but I could only get it an inch or so off the ground after accelerating through the revs. In other words, no "Jampop".
I am thinking I was wimping out and rolling on the throttle to slowly.
Anyways, I figured I would stop while I was ahead and still rubber side down and headed home. I will try again tomorrow. Maybe borrow my friends old sumo to mess with.

from what Ive done, getting those engines to pop a wheelie is really easy. When I had my S2R1000 poppin wheelies was the easiest thing. You have to be careful because if you hit the throttle to hard down low you can actually land on you ass. what you should do is get to 4,000rpm and gradually twist the throttle quickly to the max so you know where you are standing when the wheel pops up. after you have the balance in the air just throw second gear with a bit less of throttle. i guess you can go till 3rd gear but learn how to ride them in first. I dont do them anymore but when I used to on my monster I could ride 1st, 2nd and drop it with third. Its awesome but really dangerous.
And the other day i tried a hypermotard and the ducati demo guys got really mad at me for lifting the front wheel in 1st and 2nd without even been trying. So i guess poppin a wheelie on a hyper is really easy.

why the hell would you try to learn this on a (AU$20000) motorcycle! such a squid question.
anyway, 2nd gear, 3000-4000rpm, snap it off and all on really fast! you'll flip it in 1st!

I don't see any questions in my post... I have heard that 99.9% percent of squids don't know how to read.
If you have ever read.... You see that I have never done a wheelie on purpose.
While I didn't mention this, I have plenty of experience coming out of corners with the wheel up on my sportbike.
And to add to my story, I was only trying to pull the wheelies in 2nd gear. I am not brave enough or stupid enough to try them in 1st.
Edit- Just to let you know, I am a sarcastic prick. I hope that translated in the post. Sometimes I just come off like a douche :-P

First gear wheelies are great for parking lots.
Second gear wheelies are cake.
Third gear wheelies have more ground speed than I care to tangle with.
Congratulations ... now practice practice practice.

Argh the art of balance, if that is being squidly then count me in ... I am prolly the oldest squid then at 43, guess I need to buy a wife beater T and some sandshoes
Lift in second, shift into third, then into 4th and ride on.
At forth you have enough speed to retain balance and even air push and it works well, just ask the three cops I did it in front of at the track while they wee watching .... LOVE IT
.. be the only time I will get away with that.

Goes like stink, 848 cant keep up, got it up to 255kph and felt it had more in reserves.
Turns much slower than HM-S, more stable on fast sweepers though.

Interesting you say that as they have a much lazier steering rake which means slower turning but more stability.
