Powder coating wheels/engine case help
I'm about to powder coat my wheels and engine covers, I haven't had my wheels off yet and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do concerning the hubs/bearings. Can they simply be masked off and deal with the 400 degree baking process or is removal required?
Also for the engine side covers, is the tearing down of these pretty straight forward? I have had the left side off but not the right side, anything to know? What does it take to remove the oil level window?
What does it take to remove the rear shock spring?
thanks-Chris

Hi,
I had the wheels on a previous bike powder-coated. The bearings must be removed first.

What is the process to remove wheel bearings? Can I knock 'em out in the garage or will the wheel need to be heated? Or just an experienced press operator? Am I able to salvage the bearing or should I shop for replacements? THANKS!

definitely have to take out wheel bearings.on the side covers sight glass comes out with a socket and rubber mallet i made a tool that fit the sight glass perfectly.but im sure a socket would work as well.you can leave the brass bushing in which i forget what side that was on.

You need to remove everything that isn't a part of the main piece. All gaskets, bearings, whatever.

Check in with Fresno or one of his posts. There was something that needed to be masked to prevent plugging and disruption of oil flow. Can't recall what it was.
Out!

what's up bro remember me?? how's the cover holding up. ok check it out, powder coating is one of those things that you want to make sure & get right. stripping powder coat is not fun!! make sure the person has done this & these parts several times before & isn't guessing or making mistakes that will be a problem. i know someone in salinas who owns a powder coat business, & is huge in sport bikes, does several track days a year, owns several bikes himself. i've had him do swing arms & wheels for me & the work was top notch. so let me know & i'll put you 2 in touch & i am confident you will be verry happy with his work..
stay in touch

Sick, make sure the disc bolt threaded areas are sealed off, also make sure where the discs seat against the rim that these are is NOT powdercoated or your discs will throw a wobbly.
Bearings out and protect the bearing retaining surface areas as well, they are easy to get out with an alloy drift and some anger, same to put them back in, just grease lightly the outer case so they slide in nicely back into the wheel.
Just make sure ALL surfaces that seat onto something specific do not get done.
