Question about wiring...

So... I am pretty useless when it comes to working on anything that has wheels. I can take it apart and put it back together but that doesn't mean I have any idea what I am doing... Then there is electronics... I got nothing.

I am trying to wire up my radar detector but I honestly have no clue where a good place to connect it would be. I did find some How-tos but nothing for the hypermotard and nothing showing exactly how it is wired up.

That is what I am looking at. What do I do... Short of taking it to the dealer :-P

Thanks,
Bryant

Directly off the battery with an inline fuse is easiest and safest if your not comfortable tracing out a switched circuit. Detectors don't need switched power anyway. That said, if your running a DP ECU and no O2 sensor, you can pick up switched +12V on the O2 sensor connector. I wired my GPS this way.

What you have to be carefull of with a CAN bus system is tapping into a source that is switched by the ECU.

You really have two choices, 1) wire it directly to the battery which is under the seat in the rear. You could follow some of the existing wiring and use the rubber cable ties to keep it nicely in place and then up the front to the handlebars and follow the handlebar wiring to the mount for the detector. Make sure you include an inline fuse rated for your detector in the positive side of the circuit. This option is always on so make sure you turn off the detector when not in use.

2) You could use the available plug for the grip heaters. It should be in the front of the bike under the fairings. It will have two wires into it and the plug is covered by a protector cap. You can buy the male side of the plug from
http://www.ducatidesigns.com/. You won't need to wire a fuse in this option as there is a 5 amp fuse already in the fuse box for this connector. Make sure that you confirm you have the right connector by popping the fuse then testing the connector pins with a multimetre. This option is nice because it is already fused and it only works with the key turned on. However, if you plan to put on heated grips sometime then don't use this option.

You could get into more complex addition of keyed conncector blocks with a relay but I don't think it is required for this application.

There is a plug next to the diagnostic plug under the right tank fairing.I was going to use it to power the VDST without having to pull the seat, so I purchased the plug kit from ducatidesigns months ago. That being said, I have been too lazy to hook it up.

I recommend this cord, depending upon what unit you are running.

http://www.motorcycleradar.com/produ...htm#DirectWire

The only way to run is with a detector hard wired into the bike to an ignition hot wire. There options to hard wire in the detector to one of the ignition hot wires near the fuse block under the seat. Check it with a multimeter and you are good to go. Like was stated, it is easy to route the wire up to the bars using the existing wiring harness path.

I highly recommend the new Passport 9500Xi, with GPS capbilties for anyone with known speedtraps or photo radar/red light cameras.

I also recommend the Techmount bar risers. You can get the package deal here.

I also highly recommend custom molded earplugs like this so you can hear the damn thing. They are great for cutting wind noise too and I listen to my Sirius Stilletto wherever I roam.

Here is the setup I have on the Hyper.

That is the cord I have for my Passport 8500
I also purchased a Techmount and some nice earplug's.

I just have no idea how to wire it up. Though with the information here I think I can figure it out.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

I stand corrected. Heater plug only on my Multistrada. So that option is out, unless you trade it for a multi.
