"S" the component upgrades you get on the "S" you couldn't buy for the $ difference. Nothing wrong with the "reg" that's what I have (too good a deal to pass on) I'd like the wheels, shock, brakes, and adjustable rear linkage of an "S" if I was doing track days.

i'll always vote S, but given the qualifier (no high speed), the non-S would suffice. having said that, i'm not a high speed rider myself but still prefer the better components/perceived higher resale value that the S versions offer.
a friend of ours (Da_Bull) owns a non-S and he is two-times the rider i am, and rides the piss out of his bike. what am i trying to say? the base model is more than plenty for the streets.
buy the S

You will be happy with either thats for sure. I was in the same boat as you back in spring 07 with a 05 DRZsm and wanted more top end power. I got the non S which is still an awesome bike. Glad to see another Ontarian join the madness.

With the exception of the Shock and adjustible link you won't tell the difference riding. Wheels and carbon fiber won't change your ride (not enough for me to notice anyway). Some have made it a point to mention that if price/cash flow is involved you can buy the standard and exhaust and ride the hell out of it. Again, if you want black (like I did) you have no choice. Either way, you would have to be dead to not love riding this bike the way you mentioned. It's a great ride....
Good luck either way.
Tom
