need a new/used HM in CA
Anyone selling? Unfortunately....I need a California one, and with a clear pink in hand. Just got burned thinking that the "no import under 7500 mile" applied to cars only (misleading info posted on DMV web site and a seller full of stories). Seller took it back to Texas, with a little profit for him...I did not want to get stuck with funny papers, particularly if the stupid smog for bikes law is coming to the republic of kalifornia.
I am thinking a used S is worth 9-10.5K and a used standard is about 8-9.5K. I found a couple in the classifieds here, but they are at the higher end of the range.
Cash in hand, if anyone is selling. I am in the San Francisco area.

You should be fine buying an out of state Duc. They're all 50 state legal, so you can import it and reg it no problem.

The 7500 mile rule has nothing to do with any Hypermotards. They are all 50 state legal.

I wish the DMV thought that. Previous owner and I both tried for 4 months. They would not give me the title. Two dealers confirmed this new rule, as well. They claim that the new regs were created in part to protect them and the state tax rolls. Too many people were buying barely used out of state bikes, not paying sales tax (bypassing the local dealers with higher sales taxes).
DMV would let me register the bike, unless I got it in a divorce, was in the military, or it was stolen out of state. Sacramento barfed on the transaction twice.
Yes, technically....the bikes all have the charcoal canisters, but once the HM is registered new out of state, game over for ca export, until 7500 mile appears on the clock.
I need a new one, before the cash disappears from my pocket, wife changes her mind, or I get that 696 Monster instead of the Hyper.

No, its not a new rule. I thought the same when I bought an ST-3S from NY with less than 2,000 miles on it. As long as you show them the Emissions sticker, which is on all ducati's, hence "50-state legal" as stated from the other replies.
You do pay CA taxes on the purchase when you register, however most of us don't state the true purchase price. Make sure the guy you're buying it from don't fill out the purchase price section on the title. I'm sure the DMV employee won't know if your HM is really worth 10k or 4K...

Sorry about your problem. I have no solution, but I can emphatically state that a Monster POS ... ahem ... Monster 696 ... is not the solution.
Get a bike with some BALLS!

you are right...despite my being a new rider....it would feel like a downgrade. When I test rode the 696 the ergos were not great. It is almost a sport bike position, so the HM felt like my living room couch, in comparison.
I am looking at two used HMs right now.
PS. DMV did do an inspection on my bike on site, and found the federal sticker. They still kicked it back under the 7500 mile rule. Perhaps the interpretation of the regs is getting stricter, or some bureaucrat had it in for me.

Take it to AAA, they will register it for you, the 7500 mi rule only applies to bikes/cars without CA emissions stickers, i.e. some Japanese bikes with non-CA versions. The DMV guy you went to doesn't know what he's talking about, sorry you have to deal with this, I know the feeling, took me a long time to figure this one out myself.

The bike needs a DMV inspection. AAA can't register this bike. And again, whoever you talked to at the DMV is wrong. I bought a 3K S4R from Michigan. Made my appointment at DMV. Paid my taxes. Had my inspection. Got a CA plate.

I guess I got to the wrong person....I did sell the bike back to the original owner, having lost the patience with him, and with Sacramento, after 3 months. I tried the AA route, but the fine print on their site says that they do not handle out of state transactions (and inspections). I do have a premium membership with them, mostly because of my Italian car collection. Something usually goes wrong with one, or two...

I am on a hunt for a replacement. Thanks for the encouraging replies. I finally got out of meetings at work, and had a chance to think about what to do next during my 20 minute swim at the gym. Anything less than a Hyper would be a downgrade. I am spoiled with the torque and the comfy ergos. I also have bling that I took off the old one, and it would be a PITAS to peddle it...Now I just need the patience to find the right one, and ensure that the CA title is in hand.
