Stupid charcoal canister question

The charcoal canister is stupid, looking that is, and so is the question. Should the gas tank be mostly empty before I remove the canister? I'm sure this has been asked before so sorry in advance, one Y or N from anyone who's done this would really help.

when i did mine i thought the tank should be empty to. it took me awhile to figure out how to get all the gas out
