odd noise: theories?
After about 100km into a 150km ride yesterday I came to a stop at some lights and heard something odd... crackly-crunchy... around the right side.
Blipping the throttle only slightly produced what sounded like something floating around crunching up under force, rattling loose? really sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder belt area but I was still sitting on it, could've been the clutch which performed OK.
minor panic set in ... tow truck, hot day, 80km from home... not nice... so I took off a little slower thinking it will snap any moment now... it didn't... continued on my route home and after about 20 kms just riding easy I stopped again and seemed no noise apparent... an anomaly
Got around 8000km on it (4900mi), riding within its limits and not having Ducati history I wonder if this is a typical noise coming from all those bits, dry clutch, desmo etc etc... or, are/could there be issues with the timing belts/tensioners, or could the dry clutch be falling apart at such an early stage?
Meanwhile, after seeming to be ok after those 20 or so km I happened on a favorite route of twisties... oh well, let it snap if it needs too... up the throttle and enjoy the last part of the ride... which I did. what a brilliant ride
You thoughts?? Should I be concerned, good excuse to open the clutch cover and install red things in there
Just recently got myself a new GS1200, but now riding the HM still gets the heart rate up happily

mine is a noisy bastid at the best of times, just moving my legs out when riding i hear all new noises. pull the clutch cover off and have a look, if its open you may have just picked up a stone and it rattled about a bit. where did you ride? I'm keen for a few sat mornings this month.

being Sunday (tourists/cops/boy racers, like me ) I thought I'd do back ways to Wisemans (cris-crossing inland around Pitt town), got to Wisemans and didn't feel like going east so I went back via Lower Portland and some other ferry down that way ending up back up the Putty somewhat... all nice, little or no traffic till I got back to Windsor...
Then back up to Richmond and up to Winmalee (hairpins galore...) saw some rice-boys car group parked along the haripins all looking good in their sleek japanese toys, ofcourse all eyes on the Hyper
Ending up down Lapstone, Mulgoa Rd in Wallacia and home via Greendale road... probably the most winding roads inside Sydney all in one little ride... very nice!!!
I like riding with others but tend to be spontaneous cause I often feel like riding one of the ponies at any time... but we should do another Sydney group thing one day...Saturday morning are the best with no cops/traffic usually...
On the noise: yeah, looks like I might need to open it up, it's closed/standard for now... hope nothing falls out...

I say open up the clutch cover- just think of the benefits- even noisier, rusty clutch springs, people look at you thinking ' that bikes about to shit itself' etc etc.
All that extra noise will distract you from all the other noises going on too!
As for a ride- about time.
Yesterday I did Royal National Park-> Bulli Pass-> Macquarie Pass-> Bowral -> home in 3.5h.
Good fun but I still think Old Pac Hwy and Putty Rd is better.

Mac Pass is closing tomorrow I think for one week..(saw a sign on the M5). NEW re-SURFACE ooh aah !!! they resurface it every few years as it's used by trucks, it will be police mayhem once the roadracer boys get wind of this, but such fun too!
actually, it probably was a mess today "5:10pm/Macquarie Pass - Illawarra Highway at Mid Pass
Hazard - Spillage, Oil " from the RTA site, but it seems there's no mention of closure... who knows...
But... a southern madenss weekend would be fun!!!
By the way, I opened the clutch cover, not much dust, but didn't pull things apart... started it to see if things were odd, they weren't... but rather loud!! so I replaced the cover onthe spacers without the gasket... I too thought like JPG and the rattle-bucket clutch noise will soon relax me LOL

Since you were talking about open clutch covers, I just installed one on my bike. First, it's noisy as hell, but I guess that is a signature sound for Ducati so I can live with that. My next question may be kinda silly, but do you ever worry that your jeans/pants will get sucked into the clutch? I very rarely wear shoes that tie when riding the bike, so that's no big deal, but watching my pant leg and just the distraction of thinking about it is getting on my nerves. Anyone else ever have a problem with that? First time Ducati owner here by the way?!?!

Yeah, I've heard of the (loose) pants getting caught in the clutch, so suggest tie them up or don't wear them (I'll never wear shoes riding, first thing to get torn off in an off leaving the ankle/foot vunerable to damage...but that's my choice)
